What will happen if an equal number of people vote for two or more options?
I can offer no resistance, I can offer no respite
Wake me when conflict is over,
I aim for a peaceful life,
Wake me up when the fury is ended
I like living a peaceful life

I am a Qualified Nursery Nurse and every Nursery or Children's Centre I worked for, we had to pay for the Christmas meal ourselves. Then lo and behold my last Nursery owner paid for everything and I was surprised and shocked. Unfortunately despite my reservations about having a Christmas night out in Brixton, I was outvoted. I live down the road from Brixton and despite the Gentrificaton of the area, it is still a crime hotspot. We were having a really good time when we went from the Caribbean restaurant to a nearby bar for dancing and drinks. We had only been in the bar a short while, when the owner of the Nursery was pick pocketed. She noticed almost immediately and one of the bouncers set off in hot pursuit and caught 1 of the men and retrieved her purse and money. The evening was ruined and cut short, as the owner had to give a detailed statement to the Police. I had to stay with my colleagues to ensure that they were able to get licensed mini cabs home from Brixton, as Black cabs were failing to stop.

The moral of this story is that even a free Christmas meal and drinks can come at a high price for all concerned.

I had been to some of the best nights out for Christmas dinner and dances before, which I had to pay for and I paid as much as £25, then still had to pay for drinks and transport

    Ah, I see.

Perhaps she does most of the research and preparation in her own time, and then sends out emails/spreadsheets with the options?

I've known quite a few office 'social co-ordinators' who work that way.

I do doff my hat to those who are willing to take the task on!

Me too, the one I arranged was a disaster!

Different job now but I just offer to work so the others can go out, saves money, saves my sanity too

  • I am such an old misery guts. I NEVER go on any works "do-s". I hate them.

I spend more of my waking hours with these people than I do with my friends and family, and although I get along well enough with them, I would never class them as friends. I really don't need to see them drunk. Nor do I need to dissect the night when back at work, along with all the godawful photographs, and the inevitable "ooh, I saw what you put on Facebook". (I also have NO work colleagues on Facebook!)

That said, even if I was the type to socialise with work colleagues, I definitely would not spend £40 for what is likely to be a lacklustre meal with an inflated price because it is the festive season.

As a vegetarian I have to agree with the comments about the vegetarian option (and it does tend to be just one!) that others have mentioned.

Wherever I've been the evening work's party has been paid for but I've organised a lunchtime meal for the smaller team in the past. This was at Wetherspoon's, was under a tenner, and was really good value for the money with an interesting vegetarian option. I'd recommend it.
