Changing broadband from BT but keeping phone number

Hi,

I've been helping my mother in law switch away from BT for phone and internet as they are charging a horrendous amount for the package that she is on.

We've found many cheaper options however from what she's being told it appears that she would have to change her landline phone number to leave BT. This is a major inconvenience and is likely to make her decide to stay with BT.

Is there anything that can be done about this; I'd imagine that this is a major factor preventing people from switching away from BT?

Just about every provider will give the option to keep your number. Tell the one you are thinking of moving to that you want to keep it, and they should do the rest.
AFAIK you'll only lose your number if you cancel the account with BT before the new service starts.

Yep Vic is right, do not use words like cease which means dumping your number.

Now you do not even need a mac code, you just go to the new provider and give them your phone number.

However, always call BT (or your existing provider) first, ask for the redemptions dept and ask them if they want to make you an offer you can't refuse before you switch.

Quote deals on here, say you get £125 in voucher plus low prices.

If someone really wanted to stay with BT line rental and buy only broadband then Plusnet have an offering, Virgin do too but they charge £30.25 a month, hardly a mother in law product.

Don't forget to come back on here and tell us the deal you got.
