ticket splitting

I am trying to book 3 adults tickets to Liverpool using ticketysplit but can't seem to see where you increase the number of adults from 1 to 3. Help please?

That facility does not exist. Finding the splitting points does not depend on the number passengers.

Can I suggest that you use ticketysplit to provide the optimum splitting points and then go to a train operating company's website to book the tickets.

You need to either go to the website of any Train Company and manually put each ticket into your basket and make the purchase, or alternatively use trainsplit.com which will do it all for you.

Trainsplit.com should be avoided for buying tickets from as they charge 10% commission on any savings made using split tickets and falsely claim: "in all instances this still works out cheaper than buying anywhere else"


(C/F First transpennine who won't take any split ticket commission, and give nectar points + cashback from TCB/Quidco etc)

Yes, if you want to keep the full savings then each ticket must be searched for and added individually to your basket on a TOC website (or visit a railway station or contact telesales).

However some people do like an option where all the tickets are added automatically and you get one itinerary.

You say that First Transpennine won't take any "split ticket commission" but the fact is First Transpennine themselves won't actually offer you any "splits".

Yes they will.


You just put them in your basket and pay for them. It's not hard work and this is a money saving website.


MSE has a guide to finding the splits if you don't know how to do it. (Or use trainsplit to find them for you and buy them elsewhere cheaper)


(You seem to be ignoring the fact that Trainsplit falsely claim they charge les than buying elsewhere: "in all instances this still works out cheaper than buying anywhere else")

the same London - Glasgow trip circa 3-4pm 12/12, !5.30 shows:


ticketysplit £136.50
trainsplit £37.00 1AM (£30 at 4.20AM)
trainline £34 (EDIT: at 10PM & 1A, £30 at 4.20AM)



and ONLY Vrgin trains website offered me a train 13 mins later for £20, granted its a Virgin East Coast service, but that's exactly what the 3 searches above were for!




Edit: 4.20AM search shows 15.43 £20 fare now on trainline...talk about moving the goalposts. No wonder these train companies are so profitable at taxpayers and users expense, a double tax!

Yes you can add them to your basket manually - after having researched and identified those splits yourself.

By "AM" do you mean "PM"?

There are no trains departing at 0100 or 0420, so I guess you mean afternoon rather than morning.

Railways use the 24hr clock to avoid this problem.

The 1530 is £30 and this is offered by Trainsplit.com

Many booking engines are optimised for the fastest route, but you can use via points to try slower routes. The £20 fare isn't an East Coast train; it goes via Birmingham.

Overtaken trains absolutely should be shown, even if they take over an hour longer, and I know this is something Trainsplit will be addressing when they get their new booking engine up and running.

Why you so defensive of trainsplit?


They mislead by claiming no-one else is cheaper for train tickets when that is a lie,


And identifying the splits is dead easy (via trainsplit), then save money by buying elsewhere (after checking the prices - see# 7 for examples when your favourite overcharges!)

The full text of the relevant paragraph you quote is:

Unlike other third party retailers, Trainsplit does not charge any booking or card fees. If a split ticketing saving is found a commission equivalent to 10% of the saving is charged, but in all instances this still works out cheaper than buying anywhere else. If there is no saving by splitting the fare, no fees are charged.

What is untrue about that? If you buy "anywhere else" you will not be offered any splits!

You can't really compare using an automated site such as Trainsplit handing over 90% of any split savings, with the other booking sites, which won't offer you any savings whatsoever.

I find it odd that you are so against what is by far the best money saving tool for rail fares in existence. Is there any reason for it?
