The one time I went to to Blackpool, the only harassment was from the local drunks lol

    Awful place.

    Lin ;)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Why on earth did the sister get involved in the conversation? Just blank the gypsy and walk by. If you feel this is rude, then a firm 'no thank you' without looking, without stopping.

It is only when you stop and get involved then they have you and the situation can escalate.

In France they try this, but while you are stopped another member of their 'team' will be pick pocketing you while the one who stopped you has your attention.
  • There's an awful lot of detail in this first post considering the OP wasn't actually there.

So what? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to remember something someone told them.
You wouldn't make a very good policeman would you? What are you even getting at?
You are like an old woman. Grow up and stop being so ridiculously awkward!
Maybe you don't have much going on in your head and have nothing better to do than to nit pick or maybe you really don't have enough up top to remember and chronicle the details of an incident involving your own family!
Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how it remains so popular?

Sorry to hear about your encounter.

    Lesson learned.

Do NOT make eye contact with anyone on the street who offers things. Move away.

It's a total scam. We have to grow a pair and ignore this stuff.

It happens all over the world. Pushing buttons is what they are good at.

Keep your eyes peeled and your valuables safe.

Sorry, but that is the reality.

The thread title is definitely racist.

That's not to say the actions of the women were defensible.

Doesn't stop the thread title being blatantly racist though.

How is it racist to state a fact?!

In what way is their nationality relevant? I've yet to see a thread title 'White British teacher picked on my child' or 'English waiter conned me out of change'

    Hi Petra.

Like many others on here, I am very sorry for what your sister went through, but she does know that a curse is absolute nonsense doesn't she? These people are scam artists and thieves and vagabonds and they are different breed to the rest of us. They will never give you the time of day unless they are trying to con you. They are in their own insular little world, and dislike everyone outside their little bubble.

I believe that they should be arrested., but as someone said earlier, if the police appear, they run off, because they know they are thieves. My neighbour works in a certain fast food place and she says that these people are always coming in trying it on... saying they had a meal on the table, and one of the staff threw it away and they want a voucher for some more meals. It got so bad in their place 2 miles up the road, that they won't allow them in now at all, and all staff are instructed to throw them out.

Next time, as you said, she must just ignore them. And that goes for anyone else who is approached by these people.

(By the way, these are not genuine old fashioned 'Romanies,' as many of them are fine, and just get on with their lives. We are talking about groups of scuzzy, trouble making con-artists here.)

Sorry but this is just absolute utter nonsense. The Op is clearly just telling it like it is: the people were gypsies who were Irish. So they're Irish gypsies! Why must people make something out of nothing? Racist my backside! Get a grip!
There's an awful lot of detail in this first post considering the OP wasn't actually there.

I agree with hamster mush ; so what? You are quite clearly and obviously implying that the OP was the one the gypsies attacked. As hamster mush said, she has obviously just taken in what has been told to her, and is repeating it here. My BFF told me about an incident with 3 black guys the other week - yes she said they're black! (Probably because they were!) and she told me where she was, what time, what day, who she was with, and every last detail, and I repeated it word for word to my husband. Did he think it was me who it happened to? No, of course not, because he isn't petty and suspicious and he didn't try and underhandedly imply that it was actually me it happened to.

Wow, haven't heard or seen heather foisted on the public in this way since the 80s at Victoria Station in London. I assumed it had faded out as a method of intimidating scrounging.

I had a lovely few days in Blackpool a few months ago. Glorious weather. I was impressed with the revamp of the seafront. I walked up to Fleetwood one day, then in the other direction to St Anne's the other, great strolls.

Yes, there was quite a visible presence of homeless and street drinkers. I was tapped for money on numerous occasions each day by beggars (not travellers), some more ingenious than others - one pretending to sell a magazine. I witnessed a homeless lady go to the loo in the middle of the promenade and some street drinkers smash their bottles by throwing them down an embankment just as children cycled past at the bottom. But I still had a great time despite the obvious poverty there.

I'm surprised that anyone can still get there by public transport. At Preston, a tiny 2 carriage train pulled up to take holiday makers onto Blackpool. Only half of the passengers could get on this infrequent train service and it wasn't even a peak time (lunch time mid-week!).

It's relevant because it is factual! Just like describing the community and the gender was.

I have taken it as advice for in the event that I (ever) chose to go there; that should an Irish member of the gypsy community approach me, I may benefit from being mindful of the OP's sister's unfortunate experience.

Stop waving the racist banner - you do a disservice to real incidence of racism in the same way that the ambulance chasers do damage to the perception of genuine claims for injury.

It's just a description to identify them. That way if a gipsy with an Irish accent approaches anyone here on Blackpool seafront we've all been warned.

There was an attempted kidnapping here a while ago by some black men in a dark coloured car, can't remember what make of car, and the child's father came forward to try to catch them. People commented that it was racist to mention the race of the perpetrators, but how else was he supposed to describe them? No-one said he shouldn't have mentioned the make and colour of the car!

It's complete madness that you can't even describe the perpetrator of a crime without being called racist. The OP said Irish gipsy because it was an Irish gipsy, and if this helps to identify them and stop them being a nuisance to others then that's a good thing IMO.
