Would you consider the Panasonic to be good enough?
Personally, I would go for a 'camera' name - Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc, etc - but a Panasonic would be fine.
An optical zoom is more useful than you might think at first, don't bother with digital zoom, that just degrades the picture.
You might want to consider getting some reasonable software to file and 'manipulate' the 'photos. Then the building that appears to be leaning backwards can be brought upright again !
You will probably get a basic software package with the camera, plus there are a few free ones around such as:
http://www.irfanview.com/
Or a good one to buy is :
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/
You can get this for around £50.
Have fun !0 -
another good - very easy to use and beautifully featured one is faststobe image viewer (desapite it's name it also tweaks images) - it's also quite funky how you access menus when viewing one.

Boo hiss for Leica coz I have Zeiss stuff...
I rate a lot of the older Leica and Zeiss glass, modern ones tend to be better than the competition, but not better than the competition's older 35mm and medium-format lenses.
In 35mm-land, the Zeiss 50mm, f1.7 was always the benchmark (quite right too...).0 -
Yes, Sony bought the rights, designs etc for Zeiss some time ago.
