We have a antique Franklin type stove in our dining room that is full of gaps. I check the CO meter in the room regularly and it has never recorded anything above zero.

According to the installer who was complaining to me about badly made stoves with ill-fitting joints, the problem with cracks was that they meant the box wasn't properly sealed, so it wasn't efficient - air was getting in anywhere rather than through the vents through which it was supposed to flow. Emissions weren't the problem - it was just not working properly.

He's probably correct. Compared to modern stoves that I have used, the Franklin is very difficult to control. It's still a lot better than an open fire though.
