I've read most of the messages on here and found that most are talking about bags when shopping at supermarkets (I have bags for life for this type of shopping). What about when you are clothes shopping or say Argos for bigger items. I always carry two charity bags made from nylon fabric in my handbag but most large items won't fit. Do I then have to carry a large black binliner for these items?

For clothes, I just use the supermarket bags for life. If they are dirty, then replace them for free before putting clothes in there.

For larger items, I just carry them. Whether I'm taking it to the car or walking it home.

My parents generation appears to be of the belief that everything has to be put into a bag of some variety before taking it out of the shop. Never understood it myself.

I believe like your parents that some items should be bagged. I think it stemmed from the belief that if it wasn't in a bag, it was being shoplifted and also the bag promoted the shop. I recently went into a well named store and bought an outfit for a wedding. No small items ie dress and jacket and was asked if I had a bag. Surely even a man's suit would need a specialist bag?

For bigger items such as Argos it's worth considering paying 5p for an adequate large bag. You can save it for use next time when planning a large purchase.

For clothes, I have a normal supermarket bag for life which is my designated "clean" bag. Only used for new clothes and it's taken with me when I'm planning to buy.

If the purchases are unplanned, there is the option to spend 5p for a bag. And maybe review your bag storage ;) I have one small canvas bag and 2 plastic carriers in my handbag. Been adequate so far.

I use bags as bin bags but since the 5p charge I'm running out. I'm starting to even keep bread bags and bags I get when I buy clothes online. It's a hard life. :p

It's like when you see folk in the supermarket putting 1 banana in a little fruit/veg bag then repeat again with an orange. It's always the older generation.

Really? Always? I don't know where you shop but this member of the older generation was always encouraged to re-use anything that could be re-used and waste nothing. This has been passed on to my daughter. Before the days of plastic bags, we carried a shopping bag when we went shopping, and I have always done so; doubtless thousands upon thousands of my "older" generation do too.

    Your generalisation is totally absurd.

Still some customers that shop at my work still have never bothered to bring their own bags. One dumb blonde said to me she uses our bags as bin liners. Pointed out that our kitchen bin bags are 2.3p each when purchased in packs of 40.

I bought one of those wire baskets on wheels that they provide to take your shopping home in. It was a steal at just £1. Use it 21 times and you're in profit. :)
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Oh I've seen those too. They're genius!

I did actually buy one once, but the wheels broke before I even got past the car park! Faulty brakes I think
