Can anyone recommend a breakdown company as my rac breakdown cover is due for renewal but I've decide not to go with them this year due to the price and two bad experience's. I've looked on go compare and theses are the cheapest but I'm worried if my car breaks down I will be sent any tom !!!!!! or harry.

I'm with the AA and have been for over 5 years now. But I have never had to call them out (so far, touch wood) so can't really say how good (or bad) they are. But then again I drive an Alfa Romeo and a FiatPLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0

Autoaid - £41 a year covers you ( and spouse, if applicable ) in any car.
They're brilliant, however what they tend to do is send out a local recovery firm to get you to a garage, rather than attempt a repair at the roadside. What they do do, though, is take you wherever you want to go - either home, or a garage of your choice, or anywhere else. Personally I like this - my car gets taken to my local mechanic who I trust totally ( even if I'm a hundred miles from home when I break down ), rather than to "the nearest garage" who could be complete cowboys for all I know. I'd much rather my car was sat with my trusted local guy, which is also conveniently close to home.0 -

That's true Ebe S. and I also use AutoAid because they are cheap and have so far paid out when needed. The downside is that if you don't want to be transported to your trusty mechanic back home e.g. you are at the start of a holiday 100 miles or more away then it would be very handy to be fixed at the roadside. For the latter I have found RAC better than the AA.0

With Autoaid do you have to pay on the spot and how will you know how much it's going to cost.0

You usually have to pay once transported to where you want to go (one journey only so if it's to a local garage and they can't fix it, you're on your own) and then claim it back (takes two weeks but last time took over a month due to 'computer problems'). So far I have used them twice and had to pay about £120 and £76. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has been transported from say Scotland to the south, how they got on which would probably cost in excess of £1000. I think you can also claim for temporary accomodation too if required.
"how will you know how much it's going to cost" - ask for an estimate but if you are stuck you don't have much choice but to pay up do you?0 -
Another vote for Autoaid here!
Various family members have had to use their recovery service and usually get the money back before it hits their credit card (Y). I like that it covers the person (plus spouse) when driving any vehicle, and that it includes things like home start which are extras with other providers.[0 -
