Am I expecting too much of EE 4G?

Options
I've tried EE on their summer promotion for 100GB for 2 months. Currently on the second month but am underwhelmed to say the least.

The network seems very variable in signal strength and downloads rarely exceed 16 Mbps when tested.

Are you actually in an area that gets strong 4G signals?

Skip reading some stuff earlier and it seems only 30% of EE users connect to 4G at all, never mind a decent signal.
Probably down to users and phones etc, not just the 4G signal.

Average download speed of 9Mb. So your doing better than the average by a fair margin.

I have 4G now and its only showing 1 pip on the signal strength, Android OOKLA speedtest shows 12.54Mb down and 5.5Mb up, thats above the average on the site i was reading earlier (opensignal) ?

EE and 3 can be shocking poor for 4G speeds, sharing backhaul done nothing for speed in my opinion outside central belt up north. Max 6MB in cities! ??
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

I'm in the midlands and find 4G very fast, but when dropping down to 3G the speed is average at best and slower than it was when i was with O2!

No, you are wrong, I am in one of the most northern cities in England and almost always get high speeds, I sometimes see 90Mbps, and 30-40Mbps is usual.

Central Edinburgh (to a lesser extent Glasgow).
The signal strength varies wildly between 1 and 3 bars.

Went into a EE store and they say it's my S4 (being ancient) - if I buy a new phone it will be much improved or pay for double speed 4G but phone seemed fine on 3 4G, O2 4G and even worked on Rogers 4G in Toronto.

EE Store staff are on commission, so they will try and sell you a new phone :rotfl:

I am with Three, who offer 4G at no extra cost. The speed is incredibly fast in one or two locations and non existent in others. My guess is that all networks are pretty much the same. Popular areas (such as a seaside town with a large caravan park during a summer weekend) will often be hopeless.

My best speed on Three's 4G with an iPhone 5 was 53.53 Mb/s download and 23.07 Mb/s upload, the location was Ferrybridge Services on the A1/M62 junction in early September. More typically it's around 8 ~ 12 Mb/s... Which is no different to their 3G.

Problem solved next week - porting out of EE.

Strange that the EE sales people seemed less keen to sell me a new contract when i said I'd return it if their 4G didn't improve ;)
