Chaps payment not received

Hi MSE members
First post on this forum so not sure if this is the right place.
I wanted to see if anyone had been in a similar situation and could share their experience.
I am due to complete on a house today but it looks increasingly unlikely due to a CHAPS payment that has not reached the solicitors.
The CHAPS payment was sent yesterday and the money went out of my Nationwide account at around 10 am (+ £20 for the service) so it should have arrived before close of business yesterday, however it still has not been received in the solicitors Barclays account.
We have checked and sort code and account numbers are correct (in fact I used these same details for a fast payment earlier). The email confirmation for the CHAPS show correct details.
I have been talking to Nationwide and they are trying to track the payment but they say there is no time limit on this. They see the money going out but apparently it goes through HSBC and are trying to find out where it has gone. Nationwide seems unable to help other than say that they have put a forward trace on the payment to see where the money is.
I am really upset and desperate at this point. The money is gone and can't complete on the house. I thought the payment would be a straightforward process
Any help/similar experiences welcome.
Thanks

.....

Did you get the correct CHAPS code from the solicitors?

Money for the sale of our house went missing for 3 days. Fortunately it wasn't needed for onward purchase, but was a worry none the less. They said there was a wrong digit on the account number, don't know who got it wrong, we were just relieved when it turned up.Make £2025 in 2025

just a quick update.
Last I have heard from Nationwide this afternoon is that the money is sitting with HSBC because it was waiting for details about me before forwarding the money to my solicitor's account at barclays. They have taken from me details like date of birth, address, NI number, country of residence, etc, very basic questions which 1) they weren't asked when I filled in the online CHAPS form, and 2) Nationwide should already know the answer to these questions as they have my bank account from which I sent the money. They told me these details will reach HSBC tonight but can't say when the money will be sent.
Not sure who is to blame here and when they were expecting to ask for this information. I submitted the online CHAPS transfer on Monday night, got email confirmation at 05:56 in the morning, money went out before 10 am on Tuesday so should have arrive before end of Tuesday, Hopefully tomorrow (Thursday) they'll finally send the money and I can complete on the house.
In the meantime, I could not complete today, I've been told there might be interest charges from the developer (this is for a new house), mortgage offer expired today although lender has agreed to extend until tomorrow, missed half a day of work and probably more tomorrow for which I won't get paid and yes, CHAPS is a same day payment system which really isn't.
thank you all for your messages0 -
By the way, would anyone know whether using an intermediary, like in this case HSBC (for a payment from Nationwide to Barclays) is the norm? or is this due to Nationwide being a Building Society. I guess some banks would transfer directly, i.e. in this case it is better to have an account with HSBC (or other big banks) who would not need to use an intermediary.
thanks0 -
My CHAPS from HSBC directly for my house purchase 'went missing'. Tbh, I was a first time buyer and didn't know what I know now, so I just coughed up the tenner interest on my seller's mortgage and was very happy when it went through the next day.
Nowadays I'd be onto my sols, the bank and anyone else I could get hold of to find out what was going on! And probably try to claim the tenner back
Best of luck, hope your money turns up and your purchase is completed!Mortgage - £[STRIKE]68,000 may 2014[/STRIKE] 45,680.0 -

Due to Nationwide not being part of the CHAPS scheme.

Finally (after numerous phone calls to Nationwide and 48+ hours after it was taken from my account) the money showed up at the solicitors account at 2 pm today and we completed on the house. Huge huge relief!0

I'm glad it got sorted in the end.
I used the online form to send a CHAPS payments from my Nationwide account to my solicitor when I ought a property earlier this year and thankfully I didn't have any of this kerfuffle. Hopefully you were the exception rather than the rule or there could be a lot of buyers pulling their hair out.0
