Using house coal in gas fire

My husband recently changed our coal in our gas fire. I remember reading once that it had to be changed with special coal, but he bought a bag of house coal and seems to think this is safe enough? Does anyone know if this is okey to do as we have 2children and I worry about them not burning properly or us getting gas poisoning!

DON'T DO IT!!!!
This will create carbon monoxide which you cannot smell and is called the silent killer.
DO NOT USE THE FIRE!
CALL IN A GAS FIRE SERVICE MAN TO CHECK AND SERVICE THE FIRE AND REPLACE THE COALS WITH THE PROPER ONES.0 -
It's a coal effect not real coal! Get the correct stuff. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

and get carbon monoxide detectors fitted, and tell hubby to stick to putting up shelfs!0

As said DONT USE IT.
The "coal" in a gas fire is not coal at all. They don't burn they just look like coal and never burn. Real coal will burn and at best distroy the fire and at worst kill you and your family either by gas poisoning or gas explosion.0 -
Agree with above. At best it will damage the fire, at worst it may release carbon monoxide. Get a carbon monoxide detector - and replace husband with a newer model at same time. Your old one is obsolete!0

It is fine.
In fact, your husband should also add petrol to the fire regularly to keep it burning nicely.
A gallon at a time is the usual recommendation.0 -
I wouldnt even let your husband put up a shelf !
If ( I find it very unlikely ) this poster is telling the truth, get the coal off the fire, put correct ones on for the make and model of the fire and seriously ban your husband from doing anything else in the house again. If it didnt knacker the fire up already, it will kill you. CO is not just the issue here, burning from the materials in the fire will kill you and could even cause a gas expolosion, as coal will burn at a much higher temp than what should be on it, melting the copper pipe and leading to combustion of the gas.
There are places that your husband can get help you know !0 -
Coal is quite Dark Matter isn't it ? I think he's strayed onto the wrong board :rotfl:0
