Flying without person who bought ticket.

DH and I will be flying to Australia for a three week holiday. DS will be joining us (at our cost) for the final two weeks, and all three of us will be flying home together.
Is there an obvious way of booking this so that all flights are on one booking, or will DS's flight have to be on a separate booking?
How will it work for him at the departing airport, given that he won't have the payment card used to pay for the flight with him?

it will need to be a separate booking as all passengers on a single booking must be on the same flights in the same fare class which will not be possible in your case
which airline? some of the Asian airlines mention needing card but it is not common0 -
Thanks Caz3121.
We'll probably fly with Qantas.[0 -
If you book on the BA website, there is a box to tick if the holder of the card used to make the booking will not be travelling. Don't forget to tick that box to avoid problems at check-in.0

That won't matter unless it was with the same airline and booked in the same manner.
To the OP. One way round the possible requirement to show the card at the airport is to book through a travel agent like Expedia. The airline will be paid by the agent so won't know your card details anyway. There are drawbacks to booking through an agent though, so you have to take these into account.0
