Stainless steel hob - scratched

Hi there

My partner has cleaned the hob with a scourer which has left it scratched - is there anything that can be done to get rid of the scratches?

Thanks in advance

Yes - don't let him back in the kitchen:rotfl:

I clean ours with 'bar keeper's friend' and a sponge, then polish with a microfibre cloth. Sometimes it gets a bit of baby oil too.

Try a metal cutter/polish (ask him - it's stuff you'd use on cars), on a corner that you don't look at often. If the scratches aren't too deep, you should be able to polish them out.

I wonder if that was the plan :D
  • Hope you don't mind me butting into the thread too, but how do you clean the metal rings that sit above the gas burners? Mine are stained and short of getting a scourer out (which obviously will ruin them) I can't think of how to clean them.

As for getting rid of the scratches...a new hob is about 100 quid and easy to fit, so might be worth considering a new one if you've had it a few years(your partner paying obviously!)

    Thanks everyone.
I'd say it was most definitely the plan!

I'm also interested in how to clean the rings.

Black stains on pan supports can be removed using "Astonish pan, rack and fryer cleaner" tablets. It may well take two or three attempts before they come clean. You can get 'em in good hardware stores.

With regards to scratched hobs, it may be worth trying a fine "scotchbrite" pad. It's basically a very mild scourer that takes out surface scratches and imperfections. However, try in a discreet area before use just to check that they don't make the appearance worse.

Edit: It appears as though the cleaning tablets have been renamed: "Astonish Grease Buster":

I always soak them in boiling hot water and leave for half an hour. I then use a brillo pad - comes out sparkling without any scratches.

To clean any stainless steel appliances, use baby wet wipes (unused:D) and buff with a kitchen paper towel. Works a treat.

    Hi Jemma,

We get asked this a fair bit as it does happen. I have written two articles on this subject, this one specifically on stainless appliances in general and this one on ceramic hobs. I have included the ceramic hob one because some of it may apply or help.

You can't get rid of the scratches, but you can conceal them to an extent.
