Once Windows 10 is activated, you can roll back to 7 if you wish and the machine will be registered with Microsoft for Windows 10, so you can upgrade to that (at no cost) beyond the deadline date for free upgrades.
If the laptop is really messed up, maybe a factory restore will be your best hope, but you will lose any data, extra software and configuration you currently have on it - and may still have to do the free upgrade to make sure it is registered...I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
