  • Hi I too need a stuctural engineer, my architect had asked for a few quotes and only had 1 back in the last 2-3 weeks , must be over run with work??? Anyway we have been given A price of £700 but only budgeted for £450. We are west lothian, not a million miles away from Glasgow if you want to help us out too (pleeeeeease) it's a residential single storey extension.

What are all these "architects" in Scotland doing if they don’t have tame structural engineers and vice versa already on board ? They seam either blissfully ignorant or think they don't need bother clients with petty little things like structural calc's??? Its certainly not common practice down south ?Mind you we build more with bricks, timber etc not twigs and mud

Hi there, tbh most of the quotes I've seen recently have been on the high side, it seems like everyone is very busy at the moment. If your architect has already asked for some quotes from guys he uses in that area regularly I'm not sure recommending someone outside the area will get you a better price.
The other thing is that not all engineers are equal, I have worked with some in the past who provide the absolute minimum information to get the warrant approval which usually means more hassle as you get on site. If your architect has asked for three quotes from people they are happy/or used to working with, then it is likely that will be best for the project in the long term.

  • Sorry to open up an old thread but I am looking to get some comparative quotes from a structural engineering firm and am struggling a bit.

Have had a quote for over 1k ex vat from a firm that the draughtsman doing our application has recommended. The extension we are planning is around 30 sqm but would involve 2 beams for internal walls coming down.

Does anyone have a rough idea what would be a reasonable fee for this kind of work ?

Difficult to say, are you in Scotland and need a full service?
    Get a few quotes anyway
