Loud bang when driving
Was pottering along in the Ford Focus at about 30 on a country lane when I heard a loud bang which seemed to come from underneath the car to the rear. Couldn't pull up immediately as there were two cars behind me and it's a narrow lane with no passing places.
They do sometimes shoot in the area but the noise seemed to come from the car. There was no sensation of having run over anything. It was like a mini explosion. First thought was a blow out but the tyres are fine plus the car is driving fine with no warning lights.
Could it having been an exhaust backfire?
I'm worried now that something is about to drop off or explode and of course it would be Saturday afternoon........:(
Would you get the car checked out?

Get it checked out.....it could have been one of your rear springs snapping!!0

Snapped spring sounds very plausable!0

Agree snapped spring, it will have fired the top bit out and jumped back in to place.I do Contracts, all day every day.0

Definitely consider checking out the springs as suggested above.
My friend had a Renault Laguna. Parked it up at work and heard a loud bang. Thought nothing more of it until a customer at his shop called in and said there's a Renault outside dropped down on one side with the wheel at the other end of the car park. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -

Doesn't sound likely that. Springs hold a lot of tension and can be very powerful forces granted, but to take a wheel off the hub or the hub off the knuckle would take one might blow - so sorry but i'm not sure I believe this at all.0 -
Another for the spring. Happened to me 3x in last 20 years. Last one was 7 up in a Sharan. Just set off on a smooth road and temp was below zero. Very loud bang from under the rear as reported by those passengers. Snapped length was a few inches so no detectable drop in ride height.0

I agree.
No way a broken spring caused the wheel to end up off the vehicle.
Unless what the other poster meant was that there was a Laguna dropped down on one side at the other end of the car park.0 -
Did you break the sound barrier?0

Could it have been a backfire ? ( Do cars still backfire these days like they used to in the olden days - not sure ??? )0
