Nothing makes me feel thick... (£1000pm to invest)

I would consider BTL as more of a business than an investment. Starting your own (non-BTL) business can also be a great way to make money and isn't generally mentioned very much here. In the majority of cases, it is safe to assume that people who have a sum of money to "invest" and come here for suggestions of what to do with it aren't very entrepreneurial.
It probably hasn't been mentioned much in the pensions and savings areas because, in general when you save/build a pension you also have a full time job. So would not have time for self employed/owned businesses alongside.0 -

Saving money for well over half a century0 -
Depends when they matured. I had some 10 years ago which were 30 years old. Not the best timing.
The normal funds people invest in these days dont "mature". You can buy/sell them in perpetuity, or at least until your death or until the fund disappears. In the latter case it is extremely unusual to have a complete loss as on closure almost all funds are absorbed by others.0 -
So you don't think self employed/owned businesses constitute a full time job or need to save or build a pension? Strange.
You misunderstood. I was saying a full time job incl owning a firm making sprockets etc.
A lot of SE people are too busy to spend much time with family much less run a letting business on t he side.
A BTL business can take up quite a bit of time.0 -

What is this matured business? Are you talking an endowment?
We were offered an endowment mtg back in the 90's and I refused it (making us have to walk away from our own bank who only offered them at the time). I wasn't interested, as it sounded like a pipe dream to me.0 -
I'm recovering from a stroke and do find it hard to spend long on the computer, but there are such posts.
I'm sorry if you felt I was being rude. One of my reasons for joining was to learn. In the same way, I do feel I have something to offer.
Oh dear, this reply was for JimJames - must have pressed the wrong key.0 -
They would have had to choose pretty bad funds to not be up over 3 decades????????/
Japanese property maybe?
Hello atush. No they were'nt Japanese funds. I went to a FA and he managed them for me. The buy-to-let was something I did on my own. I sold them all, so that I could retire because I've had 2 strokes. I made a couple of million pounds on them in London, but my pensions haven't done nearly so well.0 -

Sorry to hear about the strokes. I think selling your buy-to-lets was a very wise decision - the less stress the better
All the best for the future and I hope things improve for you0 -

London is an artificially inflated market due to all the foreign money. When i lived in west london decades ago, areas of east london were no gos and now they are the growth areas.
Anyway my comment was to the porridge guy not you.
And dont worry about getting muddled and being new. If you are having trouble, type responses into a word processing program like Word and then have some time to see if they make sense before copying them over?
I should do that , the number of typos i have lol0
