Waiting for trains at our local stations you can see the evidence ! This is a very busy commuter line BTW !

  • I've got the Chester-Liverpool train line at the bottom of my garden. It's great. It's electric so quieter than a main road. And as its electric, very good for security. I've actually been on it to see what my garden looks like. Missed it, too many trees in the way.
  • We just moved from a quiet village to a house next to the West coast mainline. The line is in a cutting so no worries about privacy, the noise you soon get used to and it blends into the background. Given this is a mainline trains run 24 hours a day. 95% of the trains you can't hear in the house, in the garden they are gone in a few seconds. The odd frieght coal train at 3am can shake the house but not enough to wake you just a low rumble (and they're about a mile in length!)

The one thing that did surprise us and again its something that probably happens once in 5 years is maintenance. We had "de-vegitation" carried out which they did over the course of 3 weeks on a Sunday morning from 2am till 5am. This did cause a disturbance with the use of chainsaws and shredders right next to our boundary.
