Sure, you peer out of the train window occasionally, say to yourself "nicegarden nicegarden dump nicegarden bridge nicegarden dump",

    .

Oh I've done that; did it for years! 12 years of Glasgow suburban trains and London suburban before that. I got to know a lot of back gardens but don't think I ever really registered the people. I couldn't see into the houses - the light and reflections prevent it.

We've also lived with a railway line looking down at us from the end of our garden (more than 15 feet though) and the trains were going quite slowly at that point. But I never felt as if I was being watched.

OP, I recommend you go on the train at least once. It'll be a blur of back gardens and you will hardly have time to register if there were any people in them. I'm certain you won't be able to see in through any of the house windows.
  • Every house I`ve lived in has been next to a railway, would rather have that than a motorway
  • Check out whether there are any early morning Freight trains.

I lived in a place in herne hill that was a direct line to Victoria. It was actually great.

As others have stated i'd far rather a train track than a motorway or busy A road.

I would be more concerned by the noise than your daily escapades in the garden being seen.

  • Well. Thanks for all these responses has filled me with some confidence!

Dafty duck... Deffo the winner for most humourus post! An interesting read lol.

The house is around 50ft from the line. Side of house runs parallel to line. No chance of seeing in Windows I wouldn't ha e thought. Will ride the train and see.

You've concerned me more with the noise comments. No freight trains. First train 530am and last midnight. Average 2 or 3 an hour. Station is minutes up the road so trains slow to station or speed up leaving.
  • Ps. The houses don't sell often. Most been in them 10plus years, can't be that bad I guess! Except the 1 house about 10 foot away, That sells every 4 or 5 years !

The question is can you sleep with the trains going past until late and so early in the morning?

  • When you say station is minutes up the road, is it far enough? The voice announcements would drive me absolutely mad, I am less bothered about the train noises.

Ideally, I would try to find a B&B on that road, and spend a day/ night there, but you do get used to train noises.
