Strange that so many foreigners, from so many different countries, seem to think that London, on balance and taking all things into consideration, is the place to live.
Maybe they are all inflexible in their thinking.0 -

And Leeds very much isn't an exception as I know people in Manchester, Sheffield, York and even Liverpool who have "a few bob", in the form of six figure salaries and a few £m in the bank.
Daughter has just bought an ex-council end terrace in Nottingham for £125k. If you drive through some parts of that city, people can clearly afford multiple nice cars and large detached properties, and Sat Bains does well with his Michellin-stared place, despite it being under a flyover near my daughter's house.
Yes, per employee GVA is higher in London, but this is an average. Like for like salaries aren't as different as this figure would suggest, and cost of living is much cheaper in Leeds than in London.
My fresh grads can afford to rent city centre flats, which I doubt they could in London!
Working in the IT sector and coming from the North East the salaries/opportunities in that area are non existent/minimal to say the least compared to London.
Having held a mid level job in the North East, Birmingham and then London my Salary in London more than doubled. There was very little difference in salary from the NE to Birmingham (£5K if your lucky).
I don't doubt there are jobs in the rest of the country but I bet you will have 100 people going in for each one in comparison to a 3rd of that in London, you also have nowhere near the number or variety of positions outside of London.0 -
no doubt some industries are London only
but for the million plus in London that are unemployed or pensioners or work in minimum or near minimum wage jobs like retail or hospitality then London is surely a poor choice.
actually it probably isn't as the state subs them but it should be a poor choice and the state shouldn't sub them and the result should be that London takes its fair share of the population growth rather than nearly double the rest of the country0 -
My recent experience also is far greater numbers of jobs in London especially at the high end.
Many people ARE being flexible in their thinking and economic mobility by going to work in London.
Not all of them WANT to work or London or sought it but they were flexible and that's where the majority of the jobs are - millions of them.0 -

Not for sheer numbers no.
If you are a washer upper you are far more likely to get a job in one of London's thousands of hotels. It probably has more job openings than any other city.
If for any reason you lose your job (place shuts down) is should be real easy to find another one without having to move.0 -

what does it matter if you are washing towls in one of Londons hotels for £7 an hour or working a till in poundland in leeds for £7 an hour
unemployment in London and the regions is about the same, give or take 1% so it seems people find jobs everywhere
clearly in your case you say it makes sense for you and the type of work you do. but for the maybe 2 million plus in London that dont work or are paid min or near min wage London doesn't offer much to them above and beyond a place like leeds or Manchester or Birmingham0 -

The fact is (whether we like it or not) those 2 million plus jobs are in London.
As it happens I DON'T like it and if I had a choice I'd make it Bermuda, but unfortunately I don't get to choose where the jobs are.0 -

I have to fill £100k+ engineering roles from outside the UK as for some I don't have *any* local applicants, even if you define "local" as being "in the UK"! Further down the skills ladder, things get a bit easier, but we often don't more than a handful of applicants even at £50k. Even gradate roles are hard to fill.
BTW, we're kind of in IT, but the engineering side rather than bolting together bits that others have designed.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -

For the sake of this argument - none.
