Boosting my mums phone credit.

Options
Hello,

So my mum has recently told me that she has used up a lot of credit in texting me, a few friends and my brother (I have now moved out and it is important for her to text me) and is spending £20-£30 a month on pay as you go...which is stretching her already tight budget!

Being someone who is on a sim only cheap contract, I was shocked to realise she was spending this amount!!

I am aware that pay as you go operators now have 'add ons' etc for texting meaning you can get more for your money when it comes to texts. However I am a little confused...

She is on 02 and spending the least would be better. She only uses it for texting so no data is needed.

Is anyone aware of the best details out there? Does her credit get transferred for texts (therefore no credit left when she tops up, just texts). Can she opt out as easily as opt in? Can she keep her old number?

Due to her financial situation, any new 'contract' isn't really suitable for her. That is why I thought that this is the best way forward.
Many thanks!

There are lots of options which would (it seems) be cheaper
    BUT
without knowing how may texts, calls etc. she is making, a real comparison will be impossible. If you want to keep to the O2 network (if i.e. the phone is not sim-free or unlocked) you should look at Giffgaff or Tesco.

Oh yes, and a PAC is needed to transfer the existing number; details in both links if you look OR just Google "PAC code".

o2 has 30 day sim only deals:-

300 minutes, unlimited texts for £12.50
500 minutes, unlimited texts for £15.50

They did have 15% sale off these prices but I don't know if its still on.

(information take from their latest brochure)

  • She probably would send 200-400 texts a month.

I don't want an extra contract I am just looking for possible add ons to her pay as you go sim card :)

How easy is it to transfer the number using a PAC code these days?

    Very easy.

Three and Delight Mobile charge 2p/text, i.e. 400 texts will cost no more than £8 without any addons.

The o2 30 day sim only deals are just that, 30 day that renews each month for as long as you want it to, not a minimum of 12 months.
You would just transfer her number onto this this style sim.

Worth calling in and asking them. I found them really helpful when I changed what I needed recently.

they also do the big bundles - this converts how much she tops up by into calls and text every month and would save her a large amount - again she would need to add the same amount each month but is not tied into a contract - as you can see £10 would give her 1000 texts plus calls too
Big Bundles Monthly cost Minutes Texts Data
    3G/4G Plus you get £10 - 250 1000 500MB 4G ready Free: Priority and O2 Wifi £15 - 750 2000 1GB 4G ready Free: Priority and O2 Wifi £20 1500 4000 2GB 4G ready Free: Priority and O2 Wifi
    £25 - 3000 4000 4GB 4G ready Free: Priority and O2 Wifi]

if you click this link the above is clearer to see

    HTH
  • ASDA Mobile's £5 bundle would give 2000 texts and 100 mins, or Sainsbury's £8 rolling bundle would give 5000 texts and 300 minutes.

take a look at post office mobile
    http://mobile.postoffice.co.uk/

just got my mum to move over to them after forcing her to change networks, cos she has been paying (unknown to me) per text and per call for years.

a £5 monthly bundle gets you 250 minutes, 3000 texts and 500mb of data

when you topup a fiver at the post office, you get an additional fiver of bonus credit to use for 08 numbers etc, topup over £10 in branch / online or by phone and get the credit matched as bonus credit.

    Runs off the EE network.

Easy online account to use to topup and buy bundles etc

keeping her number is easy, mine was transferred from three in less than 24 hours, ihink I done it at about 4pm and it has been transferred by lunchtime the next day
    https://mobile.postoffice.co.uk/keep-my-number/

out of bundle call charges are cheapish
    https://mobile.postoffice.co.uk/call-rates/

says there's an 8p charge for voicemail, but it comes out of bundled minutes if you have them
