Hi
I am backing up a dvd film to my PC for later use on either my phone, or on to a USB stick or on to a dvd disc.
I have been given the options of saving the film on to the pc as "divx or mp4 "
Which is best and what is the difference please?
I have Google it and don't understand that much.
also what resolution should I choose 320 x 180, 480 x270, 640x360 or 720 x 480 all are approx.
Thanks

Its difficult to answer considering they are different things. DivX is the codec, mp4 is the container.
So it would depend on what codec is used in the mp4, if its something like H.264 (which is fairly standard), then i would prefer that over DivX.
DivX is fairly old now and not really used that much, plus it favours the Avi container, which again is not used much any more.
H.264 and mp4 are more standard, and will be compatible with more devices
For resolution, ideally you should try to match the source0 -
Thank you for the help
Next what is an ISO / UDF image option used for when backing up a DVD film should I just leave that option alone?

ISO is an image of a cd/dvd. So it'll be an image of the DVD which you can then copy to blank DVD. It'll be the same size of the DVD itself.
however, the iso/copy may not function depending on any copy protection that might be on the DVD.
Encoding the dvd instead of a direct copy would result in smaller file sizes, an ISO wouldn't be usable on a phone0 -
it is MP4 avc as an option if that make a difference to the original question
the iso bit I will try another day

DIVX will come out in AVI format.
It really depends on what you want to do with it, I tend to do everything in AVI because my media box doesn't like MP4.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thank you everyoneSpending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.0 -
MP4 AVC, will be an mp4 container with either H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 10 codec.
Which would be the most supported one, so should work on more devices. And its the best one to use for phones.
phones dont support avi or divx.0
