Flight delay due to weather then technical fault

My parents was meant to fly from Corfu at 10pm on Sunday evening, but this was delayed by weather til about 12. Then at 12, they were told the flight was to depart at 1.
At 1am, the pilot informed the passengers the flight is cancelled due to technical failure. They had no spare parts to fix it and will have to wait for an incoming flight the next morning to bring the part for the repair. They eventually departed at 3pm on the following day.
Here are two questions:
1. They received a preemptive email from Ryanair yesterday saying they would not be entitled to compensation since the delay is due to weather.
I plan to make a claim but I guess any claim will be turned down by Ryanair. Do people think it is worth taking this up with aviation authority after that stage?
2. They were forced to spend the night in the airport lounge. Since the flight was cancelled at 1, no one was there to arrange accommodation. Are they entitled to further compensation.
3. What can they claim for on travel insurance? They were given food vouchers so this incident did not incur but they both lost earnings as a result.
thanks.
