Having just bought a house, it was very easy to change the addresses on some of my accounts with name and address - though I did provide the card number :-).

Something else must have been given away, either in the TT breach, because name and address are easy to find out. Put it one way, I wanted to find out about my new neighbours and it was easy. I'm in a semi, the non-attached neighbour is retired and in his 60's, had lived there 25 years and grew up in the area. The attached neighbours in their 30's, living together having moved there two years ago, his previous address was a street about 1/4 mile away. She had previously been married with three kids from 30 miles away. So knowing their D.o.B, previous addresses and names and D.o.B of kids, plus occupations then you don't need a TT breach (I'm into family history, the info was from local library, facebook, and Ancestry website and gathered in a couple of days) .

Log complaint with Halifax, take what talk talk offered.
It will cost Halifax £550 if your complaint goes to the ombudsman so try settle for around £300-400 from them and once it's escalated high enough you'd probably get it due to the circumstances in the complaint.
The person who took the money would've done it via online banking and if they had a card and pin sent then that's what happened they would've logged in using the card reader and sent the money that way

None of this is helpful advice because Halifax could quite easily justify not upholding any complaint.
    DEBT FREE!

Not so easy if "Halifax admitted they were at fault" (as per OP) and already started offering compensation!

Halifax dont have card readers, they have logged in using a username password, MI if at all.

it would make little sense to confirm a change of address to an old address, wouldn't it? In fact, it would probably be a breach of the DPA.

Halifax have sent confirmations to my previous address in the past. They did ask if it was a safe address before they did so, and it was.

Legal and General also did this, sending confirmation to both new and old addresses.

And FWIW, the OP has been seriously inconvenienced, they deserve a lot more than is being offered. Both Talk Talk and Halifax are guilty of maladministration.

Also, they use automated phonecalls to the registered phone number of the account holder to authorise new payees.
  • If I had this happen to me would go to one of the newspapers, would not let this go. Contact the money section of the Daily Mail or the Times for help here. Truly incredible how they dismiss the worry they can cause their customers.

The OP would have to provide a more coherent story for any newspaper to consider printing it. They would also approach Halifax, and perhaps TT, over it, so they have an opportunity to present their version of events.

not if its been done over the counter with the card and pin, the is no phone call then.

Some new payments dont require a phone call all you get is a text message telling you, you have set up a new payee, since the update, not always do you get a phone call verification.

I'm assuming the alleged fraud the OP described must have occurred online. 30 separate payments of £1,000 instructed over the counter? Really?

Well that's unfortunate, but Halifax stand to swallow the loss if actual fraud takes place and the customer has not done anything stupid.

100% of the new payees I have set up have required phone authorisation and I do tend to set them up with some regularity as I churn through current accounts. When was the update to which you refer?
