Pc World - £50 installation Advert

After suffering several months of problems with my PC since I purchased it, I was at my wits end with all the problems I had encountered on a daily basis, but then I seen an advert from PC World on the tv saying they would send someone out to install your pc for £50.
Anyway I thought sod it and went to my local one this afternoon. I walked in and there was only me in there apart from the staff so I was served quite fast, compared to normal. I explained I had seen the advert and I wanted to pay the £50 to get my pc installed correctly, which is what the advert states. I was then asked if it was wireless and I told him it was, he takes all my details and the details about type of PC I have and he then says, because it is wireless it will actually cost £69.95p and not the £50 like advert states. I agreed to this because I am desperate to have a day where I don`t have a problem with my PC. I asked how long it would be before they could call round to my house and was told 2 -3 days which I was okay with, so I then paid the money thinking that was now all done and sorted and I would get a call when they were due but how wrong I was. After I was handed a receipt, the person serving me then said that I would have to call the number 08000232000 on the receipt and quote the job number to arrange everything. I was not happy about this, as I was then told I had to arrange it, knowing I was not going to be back home before 8pm that night to use my house phone,so not wanting to leave it another day my only other choice was to phone this number from my mobile. I asked the assistant serving me for him to call and arrange it for me as he wasn`t busy and like I stated there was only me in this huge PC world, but he told me that he couldn`t do this. Anyway I phoned this 0800 number off my mobile and was put through after 2 mins and the person I was talking to kept asking me for a 6 digit number on my receipt which there was not, this went on for approx 5 mins as I had read every single number on the receipt but I eventually found this 6 digit number , well actually it was 10 digits but because the first four digits were 0000 they don`t count. Bull---t. When it got to 15 mins on my phone and being put on hold several times without being told that I was being put on hold, I became Mr Angry and bearing in mind he could probably hear me started shouting and swearing to myself in my car parked outside PC world with my girlfriend at side of me telling me to calm down. Anyway he then returned from hold, so I said to him that he needs to phone me back as this will cost me a fortune but he replied that they didn`t do callbacks and amazingly put me on hold again without saying a word. I was irate at this stage, blood pressure was way too high, and was turning green like the incredible hulk, so I shouted down the phone can you hear me to which he replied straight away. I told him I was not prepared to stay on the phone any longer and did he require any other details from me to which he said no, which meant he could have ended the call several mins earlier but obviously they are told to keep people on lines for as long as possible. The whole time I was on the phone there was someone in the background from which he was taking orders but couldn`t quite make out what, so he was definitely getting prompted what to say, but by the 22nd min I think I may have scared him as I couldn`t believe how angry I became as normally I am a very happy go lucky person and have not got an angry bone inside me , until about 12.30pm yesterday afternoon.
The advert which states £50 for installation in your home by our professionals is misleading and will probably end up costing me over £100.
I am sorry about the long post but just needed to get it off my chest and let everyone know about this great advertI not.
I hope this is posted in correct place but if not please relocate.
I have since found out that the technicians are not from PC WORLD but are a firm that they use.
The reason they keep you on the phone for so long is they work off commission and 0800 numbers are not free from mobile phones.
I had already tried the techie forum which I know is free. I had totally exhausted all my options and that is the reason I went to PC WORLD in first place.

I wouldn't let anyone employed by PCWorld anywhere near a PC, let alone let them install it in my house!!

Professionals? You've got to be kidding! Most of them don't even know how to switch a PC on, let alone install it.

Do you want fries with that?

  • Why would they try to keep you hanging on an 0800 number?

    Cheers

As withabix mentioned PCworld are awful! Bought an ex demo pc from them and they had me packing it into the box! Asked for bubble wrap and they handed it all to me to do!!!
You will have probably arranged for the "Techguys" to come round and to be honest they are just as awful. See if you can cancel the whole thing as I doubt they will do a good job. A small advert looking for local IT services might be your answer, or ask friends/family if they know anyone?

btw why did you post in the mobile forum? I know you rang from a mobile but I think a different forum would have yielded more help.

    (btw where are you based?)

Try your local paper or parish magazine if you have one. I do some BroadBand installs and wireless set ups, normally takes about an hour to 1.5 hours at most - I charge £25ph, I only advertise in the local parish magazine and get enough work from that - I am not the only person who advertises in it either for the same thing.

It was at the end of a long day and I was not quite sure where to post it, so I apologise for posting it here. But if it helps one person to save money who maybe would not have gone into the other forums then I will be quite happy.

I have just read the post again now and all I can say to defend the grammar, punctuations etc. was that it was written at the end of a very long day, and I wanted to post it before I went to bed. I do apologise for the post and promise to do better next time , or is it do my best next time?

I suspect that 99% of people who phone an 0800 number will do it from a landline and they will have to pay to recieve the call, not make money from it. I'd also be extremely suprised if they made any money from an 0800 call from a mobile.

I do agree though that the technical staff instore at PC World are patronising morons, I wouldn't give them a penny of my money if they didn't keep messing up their prices :rotfl:
