I figured the insurance cost and tax was important because it's a big part of the running costs. Last year I did 2,500 miles, so my petrol cost was about £350. My insurance was £230 and my tax was £135 I think. So tax and insurance was as much as my petrol.

I thought this 1.5 diesel Note hire car seemed quite powerful compared to the 1.4 petrol Fiesta I had before. Maybe it's nothing to do with that...

Have a search for the problems even averagely low mileages, let alone your extremely low mileage, can cause with modern diesels and the particulate filters.

Less than a hundred quid difference in tax, and another hundred in fuel, is a drop in the ocean compared to the potential bills when the filter clogs repeatedly because the car isn't being used appropriately.

(and even that, of course, is relatively low compared to the thousands a new or near-new car is losing every year in depreciation and finance costs...)

Ah, thanks for that - looks like a diesel isn't for me.

Look like I'll be without a car for a while while I figure out what I want.
