Loyal Co-op members... Beware!!

Hi all,
Just want to get this info out there for all the unsuspecting loyal card holding members of your local friendly Co-op.
My wife being an avid supporter of the Co-op shopped there quite a lot and always insisted I used her card or got a receipt to ensure she got the points.
Sadly my wife passed away in July of this year after a long illness. I carried on using her card and decided to get the name changed. I was informed they couldn't do this and had to issue a new card. I asked for the points to be transferred to my new card and guess what? Yes the points are non transferable
They offered me a GOODWILL gesture of 200 points on my new card, since there was well over 2000 on the old card I decided against accepting their generous offer.
I have advised them I will no longer be shopping in their stores and will advise everyone I know to do the same. Not that the points are worth anything since they are not making a profit yet, but what a way for an institution with such long established customer base to act.
Please bare in mind their values are "Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others." Their words not mine.
Good-bye old friend, from a customer who can remember being sent by his mother and having to repeat our number at the till.

Firstly, I'm sorry for your loss.
Secondly, is this the "Share membership" thing they do? I'm not really familiar on their loyalty scheme, if so see their T&C'sNomination Individual Members who are not joint holders of shares may make arrangements permitted by law for shares they hold to pass on their death to a nominated person or persons. Any nominee to whom any individual share is passed on by nomination in this way, who is not already an Individual Member, shall as a result become an Individual Member. To set up a nomination please contact the Membership Helpline on 0800 0234708 we will send you the registration form to complete
You may also just be able to ring up and change the details but that's a bit under the table and seedy. Just a thought though.0 -
Wrong forum ... this should be in Praise, Vent and Warnings.
Condolences on your loss.

Sorry to hear of your loss but if I understand it correctly take a look at the link below {6.3} as if I am looking at the right thing that is not what 6.3 states.
If I am incorrect I am sorry

Sorry for your loss.
I stopped using them after their previous CEO was caught with prostitutes and snorting drugs.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

IIRC that was the CEO of the bank, not of the Coop as a whole.pendragon_arther wrote: »Sorry for your loss.

Was that the former preacher/pastor/priest who knew absolutely nothing about banking?0

Many thanks for all replies.
I went with London50's link and emailed the Co-op, they have apologised and passed on the points/credits. Why do people have to fight to get for what they are due? It always seems like they try to fob you off and hope you just go away
Cheers

well done you for persevering !
Im still chasing points for 2 pre-paid funerals costing over 5k booked in may 2014.
I too remember having to quote the number when you went shopping, dont remember it all now, lots of 3's and 2's0 -
This thread reminded me of a minor but annoying incident when shopping at the co-op a few months ago.
I presented my loyalty card after the transaction had gone through and to cut a long story short was informed there was no way the points could now be awarded.
That was it - not "bring your receipt in next time" which most other supermarkets seem to offer. The assistant's only comment was I'd need to remember to present the card pre-transaction in the future.
It wasn't for a massive purchase, so just forgot about it, but it always wrankled!
It's very sad the Co-op are alientating their traditional customers base as in the OP's story. I certainly don't think they're very attrative to new customers so do wonder what the future holds.0 -
It tells you on the bottom of the receipt how to get the points addd.0
