United airlines

Hello

My flight was recently cancelled without any notification. I was flying from Newcastle to New York. Not only did I lose a full days holiday but had to pay for the hotel for the night we weren't there. We were put into the next days flight.

I used the template on this website to apply for compensation - £440 per person.

Untied have wrote back citing safety reasons and that they don't apply to regulation EC261/2004, so no refund but a credit note for flights for $300 each.

I don't want a credit note for another United flight but do want a refund. Are they correct saying I'm not entitled to a refund?

Any advice would be appreciated.
