  • I paid a third of whatever I got per month - when I was working, it was a third of my wage, when I was on benefits, it was a third as it was contribution based at the time and I still had to pay prescription costs

I was on a YTS that paid £25 per week, then went up to £26.25. I worked at this Mon-Fri. On a Saturday I kept the job I'd had during sixth form and as I had my 18th birthday, I was paid the adult rate of £2 an hour for the 8 hours I worked. Mum asked for £8 per week. After a year, my YTS placement took me on permanently and I could pack in my Saturday job and be £2 per week better off in total. I told Mum who put up my housekeeping by £2! When I protested, she said she;d never taken my Sat wages into account. I never again told her about a pay increase!

My parents let me stay at home rent-free for 1 year after I finished sixth form (I was working part time) Then after that I paid £100 a month. I started full time work at 20 and I lived at home until I was 26. I continued to pay £100 a month and I was encouraged by them to save my money instead, which I did. I'm 28 now :-)

I'd take into account what sort of luxuries you are offering them to, I paid £250 a month which was about 1/2 of my wage - then had to buy my own food - but for this I sort of had a bed sit downstairs. I had 2 rooms which even had my own fridge freezer.

My Mum charged me £100 previously but I had to do my own washing and food shopping again, I could never quite get my head around my ex was charged £250 for a box room (I think slightly more then half his wage at the time) then spent 3-5 nights with me anyway.

I think 200-300 is fair amount if they are earning a full time wage, about what you'd pay for a room anyway if they moved out and lived with others depending on location but you can only judge it as it comes.
People don't know what they want until you show them.
