It depends on the value/quantity of your stuff and how much help you can guarantee on the day.

Alone and useless, with nothing valuable and no big goods (just a 2nd hand sofa and an under counter fridge), I used a "man and van" service (there were two of them) to move me 2 miles down the road on a date when it wasn't essential/crucial I moved (overlap of 2 weeks renting/buying).

I'd definitely use a proper removals firm next time as I've now got a fridge freezer and a bed and a couple of chests of drawers.

The question is: if everybody let you down do you risk running out of time and/or things being damaged.

We had movers even though we had over a month to move everything but my husband is disabled and at the time my youngest children were 5 and 7 and I felt I had enough to do. When we were younger we did it ourselves (had less stuff as well.)

When we moved into this house 15 years ago - we were living in a semi opposite and buying another house from the builder - we used removal men but not the use of a pantechnic to save money. Sounds easy !! Lol

Well it's actually a lot more logistically harder than it seems. As you have to get all the stuff out but no where to store it ( unless in the street ) until completion takes place ( which was delayed !! ) in the end the builder let us put our stuff in the double garage out of pity! We finally competed late afternoon ! It was very very stressful

With any move its surprising just how much stuff is in a house tucked away in sheds lofts and garages ! I've always underestimated how much and how long it takes to pack !
When my mum and dad moved from a house to a bungalow in 1985 - we all pitched in as it was 10 houses along in the same road ! I can still remember the furniture being wheeled up the road in a long line ! That was fun but exhausting !

My parents have packed themselves using boxes from supermarkets and lending from removal company. Then get a removal company to do the actual move as they have large items of furniture.

One of out family friend's parents asked the removal firm to do the packing too. They had to buy universal remotes for their TV etc as they never found them after packing. Turned up a month later in one of their last boxes to be opened - in one full of books.

My parents had their remotes to the tvs etc in the box with the kettle, teapot and mugs!

That is useful, I think if we move again we will have them pack for us but I think I will have a box of things like remotes and telephone chargers and useful bits and pieces that I will pack myself. Really annoying when you lose that sort of thing.

  • We are planning to move ourselves by hiring a Luton van for the day. We live in a 1 bedroom flat going to a 3 bed house which is a 10 min drive away. Luckily we have a lift close by so that we can get stuff down fairly easily rather than stairs. Also a lot of the stuff we need we have ordered and is still waiting to be delivered to the new house which does help otherwise I doubt we'd be able to move in the flat.
The cheapest I've found is £75 for the day

Moving between rental properties it's always been a "rent a van and bribe people with dinner" job, but as we've acquired more furniture it's crept up to a two day job now. Well, two days, and then two weeks going back to clean and collect post. That's the great advantage of renting, the overlap. We'll probably do the same when we buy somewhere (we need a new bed, so perhaps we'll order that to arrive before we do!) but if I was selling one place and buying another I'd hire someone.

My aunt and uncle had a moving company that packed everything for them. Said it was the best move they ever had - they had to drive from one end of the country to the other, but they could leave bright and early, stop for a pub lunch, and still got to the new place before the movers. No hard work, no hassle!

We are moving (we hope!) in a few weeks and its 70 yards door to door. Our plan is to do it over a couple of weekends (we are keeping our current place) but not settled on that plan yet as we have a LOT of stuff...

We were on a very tight budget for our last move. We were going from rented to rented but the move was unplanned and unexpected as we had been renting for 10 years off a country estate. Sadly the old dear who owned the houses and stated in her will that they were to remain rentals died and he money grabbing son evicted all the tenants with the minimum of notice (most had lived there 40 years) and sold the houses.

It nearly killed me. 1 dog, three cats, 12 chickens and all the ins and outs of a big three bed… being squished into a small 2 bed. Also the OH is 6’4 and I am 4’11 so heaving stuff about is not equal or balanced.

We are on track to buy a house September next year and one of the non negotiable conditions of the move will be the OH and I will use a packing removals service. He is already grumbling about the cost, but I will not move on this.

I was ready to kill last time and it took forever to move we took a whole week off and its still came down to the wire! and i had to most of the packing and planning as the OH was convinced it would be half a day max and easy as pie (it was 2 hours round trip each time, it poured it down all week so we were cold and wet and everything seemed to go wrong... first day rock up to the new house... front door has jammed shut, LL had to call out locksmith then a carpenter so we lost a day, then a pipe burst in the kitchen, LL had to call pp out and we lost another day....then we got stuck behind an accident on the motorway and lost half a day while they closed the road. Then the OH pulled his shoulder...)

I would not have wished that week on my worst enemy.
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...
