  • Best of luck with it all!
  • My story - well, first I decluttered Feb - May. Lots of now unwanted items as we became empty nesters. Lots passed on to adult kids or their car boot sales.
    May - August stared packing.
We hired a local removal van and x2 helpful men. Thank goodness we did! Moving day and the rain came down. Floods were reported all about. The x2 men got soaked....we had to move, be out by 2pm.
    They did a great job.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

I couldn't justify the £1000+ the removal men wanted when we moved when we could just as easily do it ourselves.

We moved from a stuffed to the brim 3 bed to a town house. Although we did not have a time to be out as we ere not selling our old house.

OH and I did it all whilst the children were at school/with a friend except for the sofa, large wardrobe and our bed which I couldn't manage (dodgy wrist) so a friend helped once he was home from work.

If you are reasonably fit and hardworking it is not too hard.
  • We have generally paid for a man with van remover, and packed ourselves.
Good discipline to go through stuff and sort it out (to ebay/freecycle/charity) beforehand.
  • We've moved several times gradually getting bigger with our family growing and accumulating more and more stuff! We moved ourselves hiring vans initially but with kids in tow and less "disposable" furniture used proper removal men this time, an article on the guides page of our movers Van Man Exeter (not allowed to post the link !) persuaded me and I must admit it made for a much less stressful move. Just remember to supply them with plenty of cups of tea - don't pack the kettle :)

I'm really picky about who a let touch me, let alone carry me around, so I'd never let a professional move my self. I'll move my own self every time.
  • We have had several months to move (lucky enough to be able to buy new house without selling old one first) and our buyers are happy to have any furniture/white goods that we don't want to take with us. We have done it ourselves, but had we have had to do it in one day, like most people do, we'd definitely have had professional removers to do it for us, including the packing.

The crux of the issue is how you are moving. If you are selling up and moving same day I'd probably go down the removal men route.

However, we have a week to move all our stuff, so I'm gradually moving stuff and I can get all the furniture in a van so only need 24 hours hire.

I do a compromise. I pack and transport every last bit of the small stuff but hire a Man with a Van and Mate to move the cumbersome things like sofas, beds, bookcases.

Cheaper than an osteopath and better for my temper, too!

My parents have packed themselves using boxes from supermarkets and lending from removal company. Then get a removal company to do the actual move as they have large items of furniture.

One of out family friend's parents asked the removal firm to do the packing too. They had to buy universal remotes for their TV etc as they never found them after packing. Turned up a month later in one of their last boxes to be opened - in one full of books.

My parents had their remotes to the tvs etc in the box with the kettle, teapot and mugs!
