How soon can you give notice of termination?

EE mobile, though might apply to other networks: is it possible/allowable to given notice of termination at the time you take out a contract, along the lines of "thanks for the 12 month contract, please accept my notice of termination to be effective 12 months from now"?

    The T&Cs say:
    7. Ending this Agreement.

You can phone Us and give 30 days’ notice to end this entire Agreement with effect from the end of (or after) the Minimum Term.

It's a little bit ambiguous, but it could be inferred that the answer to my question is "Yes".

I read it as you can only give 30 days notice. I.E. I want the contract to end in 30 days.

We are into the realms of what is generally understood by the phrase '30 days notice'

This begs the question; for example, you want to end the contract on 30 Sept, because that's when your 12 month minimum period expires. If you tell them on 1 Sept you've missed the boat and will presumably have to pay another month, but if you tell them on, say 25 Aug, it's too soon. Does this mean that you must tell them exactly 30 days before you want to, and are allowed to, terminate?

No, not at all, you have to give 30 days notice to terminate at or after the end of the minimum term.

If you told them on the 1st or 2nd of September (as per your example) it would end 30 days later, so the 1st or 2nd of October. It doesn't need to be a calendar month or exactly 30 days prior, just 30 days that would end on or after the end of the minimum term.

  • For the one and only phone contract I've ever had I put a reminder in the calendar 30 days before the end of the minimum term (with what was then T-Mobile) phoned them up and cancelled.

I said no to a couple of retention deals and service and charging ended exactly 2 years after contract commencement.

This was somewhat simpler than it would be for some as I didn't want to keep my number.

If I had wanted to keep my number I would have asked for a PAC and used it 5 days before the contract ended to port to a PAYG SIM.

You are very trusting. I think giving 11 months advance notice of termination is an accident waiting to happen - either because they forget to and dispute you ever did, or you forget and suddenly a handset ceases working because you forgot.

Put it in YOUR TTD list, and contact them the month before.
