"Kitchen" table in the living room?

Can I just clear this up, in Ireland the burial is usually within a day or two of the death, so the body is not "kept hanging around", it's usually one night. The family would take turns to sit with the body & pray, hence they are awake - where having a wake comes from.
Of course the "best" room in the house would be used, it's respect.

Yup. It's still quite normal in Ireland to bring the body home (not to the extent it used to be, but still). When I moved to England, I remember feeling quite shocked that people waited so long after a death to have the funeral. It's just a matter of what you're used to.
  • I much prefer having the table in the living room. Hate sitting with the dirty dishes in the kitchen and the smell of whatever I burnt onto the hob (I am not a tidy cook!)

Whereas I get cross that I'm stuck in my tiny kitchen without anyone to talk to while I cook (especially if I have guests), I have to keep leaving it to check on the kids (they're still tiny), and getting anyone to help is fairly pointless because we're constantly tripping over each other or standing in the wrong place. I dream about kitchen diners practically every day :) But then I can't imagine having a meal with anyone who'd care if I'd burnt something onto the hob (and if they did, it'd probably be the last time I cooked for them ;))

We ,too, have a lounge /dining room, with separate kitchen and deliberately didn't buy the alternative house design, on our estate, which had a kitchen diner arrangement.

We have an oak 1940s dining table and chairs which belonged to my parents, so the layout suited this, too. (Steamy kitchen would spoil the varnish).

If you wanted to make a kitchen table look more like a dining room table, you could leave it with a permanent cover, such as the traditional chenille .

I grew up in a house where the dining table was in the living room, which was the norm in the 1960's. I remember there being a lot of crumbs on the living room floor. Also, it seemed that everything had to stop in the living room while the table was pulled out and set and then again as everything was cleared away again.

If works for the OP then it is fine but perhaps consider buying one of those cordless hand-held vacuum cleaners.

We have a tiny kitchen that has cupboards around the entire room, so it would be completely impossible for the table to go in there. Our kitchen is open plan into the living room so we have a small table (it can fold out to seat 6 people but we have it pushed into the corner to seat just the 2 of us) in the corner right by the kitchen.

I've never felt like it's out of place (not that we have much choice about where to put it!) and because it's right next to the kitchen in the corner it doesn't really grab attention or get in the way.

The OH will give it a trial, and I think he'll like it btw which is all I am concerned with as he lives here too :rotfl: I don't give a toss one way or t'other what people may think.

I was just curious if I was in the minority of those who would choose this set up rather than in a kitchen or dining room if you have one. As our living room/lounge is just about 13x14 it will take a bit of working, but I do love a challenge!

I would much rather have a separate dining room, but if it was a choice between the table in the kitchen, or the table in the living room then I'd pick the latter.

Our table is currently in our living room and I find it has several advantages (but also several disadvantages).

Could be worth looking at other options too. We didn't want a permanent table in the kitchen, so we had a little kitchen bar put on with hinges so we can fold it down if we want. We have a butterfly table and set of folding chairs for when we have guests, as the bar only seat 2

We hav a large kitchen, with a big farmhouse table in it, we knocked through to the dining room to create a sitting area in the kitchen with two sofas and a tv. Very sociable and good for day to day family life.

We have a formal dining table at one end of our sitting room.

We almost always eat at the table, having a family meal at the kitchen table every evening. Feast days, Sundays and for entertaining we use the Dining Table. Although visitors often gravitate from sofa's to sitting round the kitchen table.

We eat breakfast and lunch at the kitchen table too.

Do whatever feels comfortable for your family.

I just wanted to update because it drives me round the bend when people start a thread and then never bother to post the outcome, even for something as silly as this :)

The table has been in the living room now for about 2 months and we are loving it. The room is small but not tiny and it has made it lovely and cosy, even DH agrees.
