My kitchen was big enough (when I moved in) for a small table in chairs, but I ripped it out & filled it with cupboards & a giant us fridge freezer.
We did the opposite of this. We have kept to a smaller number of cupboards and put the fridge freezer in the utility room so that we can have a small table and chairs as well as a sofa in the dining end of the kitchen. The room is big so its not cramped but it just goes to show that everyone has different ideas!
Do what works for you. I think the only thing that would put me off the idea is if I had small children and a carpet in the living room.0 -
Typing this from my lounge diner, so I obviously see no issue with this setup. I actually can't stand the modern trend of kitchen diners. I want to eat away from all the prepping and cleaning, TYVM!0

We have our table in the living room, and it makes for a lovely family space not just for eating but for games, crafting, laptop-ing etc0

I don't like kitchen diners, not with tables in the middle of the kitchen.
You can't throw a dinner party in the kitchen, nor would I want to eat any type of formal meal there.
It's different if it's huge & set away from the cupboards.
Ideally it's nice to have a kitchen big enough for a table or large breakfast bar, for cereal & snacks and then a proper dining table either in the dining room or through lounge.0 -
We turned our dining room into a bedroom and moved the table into the lounge. It works well as the whole family is together in the same room.0

I heard someone young over here (Ireland) saying you have to have a good room, you need a room to be laid out in  (this is for waking purposes for those not familiar with terminology).
I agree with everyone else, go with what ever lay out suits you. i've lived with open living for the last number of years, so open Kitchen/living room. I do think it's nice to define the area, either using rugs, or careful lay out of the furniture - but sounds like you're already doing this!0 -
Have you seen them tables that collapse and can be made into either coffee tables when low or dining tables when high? Teamed with a couple of bucket chairs it would look great anywhere.
It's your home, do what suits you.0 -
Well, I doubt the world is going to end because of this, so just do it.0

I know it's each to their own and all that, but I so agree with you. That is my setup too and works so well for me.
I don't have any kids though, so maybe the kitchen/diner works better for those who do have children?
I can fit a table in the kitchen also. I use it for my computer work, easy to get a cuppa when I want by just swivelling the chair, how lazy is that!
I really like the table in the "living space" when having friends and family over - as you say, I can close the door on the kitchen and no one can see the mayhem and mess there either! Suits me anyway.0 -
We have a kitchen / living area and have a fold down table in the living room. No room for it up all the time but we use it sometimes, mostly for guests or christmas tbh - all good intentions!0
