For them to take interest and to follow you, you'd really have to have caught their attention, they must have seen you do something much worse than simple speeding........ So be thankful they only got you on a minor speeding offence.

Not necessarily. They could have been going from A to B, saw the OP going a bit quicker than the rest and thought he was worth following for a mile or two. I have been caught twice in this way, and both times the roads were empty and I was doing nothing to attract attention, other than driving above the posted limit.

Incidentally, driving 0.4 miles at 47 mph would take about half a minute, so it's not as if the OP was speeding for just a second or two. A lot can happen in half a minute.

Two officers opinion is enough to convict.

More than enough with a follow check using a calibrated speedo.

In England, two officers opinion doesn't need any speed measurement device whatsoever, you could zoom past them while they were standing on the pavement and be convicted of speeding, if both agree that you were.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • It sounds like you admitted the offence to the cops when pulled over?

    Next time, deny it.

Much worse? A brake light out was what they told me had attracted them to me but they decided not to 'do' me for that! I don't know why they made that decision but I was apparently to 'consider myself 'lucky' and to get it fixed.

It's easy to miss a hidden camera, but driving over the limit for half a mile with a police car up your chuff means you weren't really paying attention.
It was dark and my mirror was flicked to the 'dark side' so I couldn't see the words POLICE between their headlights! Couldn't see the front of the vehicle in my side mirrors as they were awash with his headlights. I was more interested in paying attention to what was ahead of me rather than concentrating in too much detail on what was behind me - it was a car, it had lights on and was quite close. In reality I obviously need to be looking at my speedo more having come out of a 50 to a 40 section!

Nope, I didn't confirm or deny it - I wasn't asked, I was told so I said nothing. That fact is recorded on the NIP.

Anyway, I'd just like to thank you all for your responses and stick my paw up here and say that I'm responsible for driving my vehicle in the manner in which I did whist knowing what is required of me by law - I don't have to agree with it but I still accept that I have to live within the confines of it or accept the consequences! So consequences accepted and off on the nicely offered awareness course I shall trot with suitably slapped wrists but my license still free of any points. Thanks again all. :-)

The trouble with denying it you close your methods of disposal. The only option then is to put you before a court.

And it'll fail you the attitude test, and in this case you'd get written up for the brake light too.

Admission or denial is irrelevant to a speeding offence - other than as a possible indication of attitude.
  • Am I missing something here?

Just where has the OP said anything other than the cop's car speedo was being used?

The OP has given no indication of what equipment was being used, beit the speedo or otherwise.

In that case I stick by what I stated earlier, next time deny it.

Worked for me the one time I was pulled over in similar circumstances.
