He is the worst manager I have ever had, not just in this job, but in my whole working life. Doesn't speak to staff, talks down and patronises everyone.

Poor advice right there, that's the easiest way to earn a disciplinary. While you may be on your time it's wise to remember that any comment made to a manager is, regardless as to when it's made, a comment made to a manager. There's a level of professionalism which is expected from your part, even if he's the "worst manager I've ever had" it still puts him in a position to direct you to the unemployment line.

By all means point out that it's of great inconvenience to yourself, but you'll attend. Might be that it'll be 100% useless, but approaching it with an open mind is certainly the best idea here.
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.
  • I'd personally politely explain to him that the offered hourly pay doesn't cover the expense of travelling but without suggesting that you won't go. If he doesn't offer the extra I'd still go and then put in a formal complaint about his meeting to his superiors on the basis that it was a waste of time and cost you money to attend when it could easily have been done without wasting the companies money on the meeting time pay.

There is a level of professionalism expected from managers which includes not power tripping with meeting not only outside working hours but also outside working days. Jobs where the shift ends at 2pm are not the kinds of jobs where out of hours meetings are acceptable.

Except to those who want to introduce serfism.
  • It was only those with the starsign of Libra that had to grow some b*lls today! :D

1 Sunday inconvenienced out of how many off.
  • if you get the opportunity

An off the cuff, why are we wasting money on trivial offsite meetings these days to someone more senior might resolve the situation.

They can't fit a 60+ workforce into work in one go for a meeting without everyone standing huddled together awkwardly so they have gone and booked a room at some local community centre near to work to accommodate the meeting obviously at a cost.

In the past when they have had meetings it has usually taken part over a few days with a few people at a time as and when people are on shift. Even not everyone on shift can attend a meeting in one go as we can't completely down tools. Hence why they want to do it out of working hours. Last shift ends at 6pm on Sundays hence why they are holding the meeting at that time, and 10pm weekdays hence why people who don't attend have to go to the 10pm one next week.

If you want to start being difficult over a one off meeting, then you can expect your employer to start being difficult with you. They can't dismiss you over this, but they can always start to look for other reasons - should they want to.

The choice is yours, but I can see this coming back on you if you don't go.

Just because YOU are some kind of wimpy employers doormat doesn't mean everyone else has to be.

OP - Are you getting paid double time, or just a standard hour?

If the employee has an issue then htey raise a grievance, your poor advice in being as rude as you want is very poor and likely to get the OP in trouble if they took it when there are better ways of raising issues.
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

One off meeting - ask for petrol or overtime to cover the costs and suck it up.

Regular meeting would be a different matter.
