Thank you. I have cut and copied your instructions and downloaded the HJTInstall.exe to my desktop.

My worries about the log refer to the fact that my full name is shown against each item. I'd like to keep my anonymity. I will try and show the log with my name deleted.

Thank you. and WOMBAT too who has been staying with my post.

The HijackThis scan log opens in Notepad. Just do Edit - Replace to change your name to something else and post the log.

It's all a bit confusing to a novice like me but the latest version was already on my system. Can't remember downloading it. anyway, here is the log. What I thought was the log previously, on the older version, must not have been what you were asking for. I did say it was long. NB I never use IE. Should I uninstall it as suggested on an earlier post?.

Well, that doesn't look too bad to me.

I would run HijackThis again and put a checkmark against the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch

(this one could be OK but is a bit suspicious why it has an entry for Windows Media Player in the Internet Connection Wizard key).

Also, have you used AVG Anti-virus program in the past and uninstalled it? If so, you can put a check against these:

    O23 - Service: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (Avg7Alrt) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: AVG7 Update Service (Avg7UpdSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: AVG E-mail Scanner (AVGEMS) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exe (file missing)

Then click on Fix Checked in HijackThis.

You also seem to be running Windows Defender and the AOL anti-spyware programs. As they do the same job, then I would run only one of them as they are probably overloading your system.

If that doesn't speed up your computer then I would suggest replacing the McAfee Firewall with something less bloated such as the Kerio Personal one:

    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/

(Although it says you have to pay for it, download the free trial and it reverts to the free version after 30 days).

Let us know how you get on.

Me again Wombat. I have done all that but cannot find Windows Defender anywhere. My computer does seem to be improved already so I will use it for the next few days before deciding that the McAfee Firewall should go.

    Hi againg Gran.

    Glad you've seen some improvement.

    This line in the log:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

shows Windows Defender is somewhere in the system. You've probably tried some of these, but have you checked in START....Control Panel....Add/Remove Programs? If so, uninstal it.

Is this file on your computer?:

    C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

If it is, then Windows Defender is on there, but you can't just delete the file.

It may be running as a Service. Try START.....Control Panel......Administrative Tools.

Double click the Services icon and scroll through the list to see if Windows Defender is mentioned in there. If it is, right click it and click on Stop. Then right click on it again and click on Properties. Click the drop-down box Start-up Type and select Disabled. Click Apply. Click OK.

You also asked if you should uninstal Internet Explorer. I personally would leave it on as it gives you a backup to get on the Internet if anything goes wrong with the browser you're using.

Hi Wombat, I did look for Defender in the program list and in My Computer. I will now have a look at everything you have mentioned and report back. It really is great when, just by posting on a forum, a computer problem can be fixed. It's already running much better than it was.

I'm back again. Found Defender and tried to remove it but the following came up:

"The feature you are trying to remove is on a network resource
    that is unavailable".

    THE SOURCE shows
Temp Internet Files\Content IE5\1R6F2GAI... (can't see the rest)

    Hi Gran.
You can get that error message if the uninstal program is corrupt.

In order to try and resolve the problem, try downloading and running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

When you run it, select Defender from the list of programs to try and clean up the installation and registry entries. Then take a look and see if any files are still present in the Windows Defender folder if it exists and delete them.

You're doing very well for a novice.
