This is for GoofyGat and anyone else who can help.
Been having problems for few days. Computer going very slow and even when I enter MSE into Google search the typing does not appear straight away. When I click on a page to proceed I have to wait ages for the new page to appear. This is what I have my computer GoofyGAT so what do you suggest I get rid of that might help. Please don't ask why, they just seemed like a good idea at the time:
HiJackThis 1.98.2
Adaware6
Spybot Search & Destroy
McAfee personal - came with AOL package
AOL Spyware Checkup - run regularly
Reg Repair Cleaner
The Cleaner
ScripTrap 1.03
Spyware Blaster V3.5.1
Spamhialator
Hope someone can help me.

Hi Gran. Since you have HijackThis maybe running that and posting a log on here would give us a clue as to what might be slowing your PC down.0

Thank you Wombat. I'll do that and report back. I did think someone would say that I have too many of these programs and should ditch some but 2
weeks ago my computer was working fine even with all these safety programs on it. Also, another strange thing, System Restore does not work.0 -
I clicked SCAN in HiJackThis and a long list was produced but none of the items on it were checked so assume this means there is nothing to be fixed.
Is this correct?0 -
Press CTRL+ALT & DEL and click on Task Manager.
Under the Processes Tab what applications are using the most Memory?0 -

No, Gran. It just produces the list and you check the items you want it to fix. It doesn't make any decisions about what needs fixing, that's up to you.0 -

Obviously not - get expert advice before making any changes after posting your log! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Yes - sorry for any confusion. What I meant was that the program doesn't advise as to what needs fixing or not, that is up to the user or any suitably qualified person in the event that the user isn't sufficiently aware of what might require fixing or not.
In the latter case it would be up to the user to tick the appropriate boxes against the items as advised by said more qualified person, assuming that the qualified person was elsewhere other than the place where your computer was, after which the program would make the necessary changes to your system when you clicked on the appropriate button.0 -
I did this last week and there were two pages of items. Do you really want me to post this long list and is there any safety issue involved if I do?
I did get things working better last night after running HiJackThis as suggested by Wombat but another strange thing is happening now. I have just looked at two banking sites and in both places the screen was suddenly blank(black). It came back after a minute or so but I have never had this before. Also, although it is working a bit better it is still slow.0 -
Hi again Gran.
There's no safety risk in posting the HijackThis log. It just lists what programs are running on your computer plus a few other settings and stuff.
If it's 2 pages long then maybe you have more running on your computer than it can cope with, but the main thing is that it may highlight any programs that shouldn't be running, such as browser hijackers, which will definitely slow down your PC.
The symptoms you describe sound to me like there is at least one program running that is interfering with your browser.0 -
If you're going to post a HijackThis log, uninstall that old version and use the the latest.
Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.- Double-click HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop to start the installation.
- By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Hijack This.
- Click the Install button and HijackThis will launch automatically.
- Click the Scan button to generate a HijackThis log and then click Save Log to open it as a text file.
- Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
- Come back to this thread and Paste the log (Ctrl+V) in your next reply.
