The basic proposition for Now TV is a £10 one-off purchase price. You don't need to subscribe in order to make use of it for non-Sky services.
The Sky Entertainment sub is £6.99 per month with no tie-in, which is better value than a Satellite-based Sky Sub. You can also get Sky Movies and Sky Sport, although these are somewhat more expensive.
There are various bundles you can buy that combine the box and the sub for an introductory discount.0 -

turns out we have an aerial point in the living room. tried auto tune for freeview and we only pick up channel 4's analogue signal. So looks like the above suggestions will be best. freesat and streaming boxesTo make money work for me

That is impossible as the analogue TV signals were turned off a while ago.
I would guess the op had the aerial cable looped through the Sky box, then when tuned in it is showing the analogue feed from the Sky channel currently selected. Which in this case was Ch4.
OP. Connect the aerial feed directly to the TV from the wall, carry out a full install including the digital tuning.0 -

OP, if this works (assuming their is an actual aerial connected to the output socket), who could have Freeview via the aerial and Freesat via the Sky box.
We have Sky (until next month, anyway) and use the aerial direct feed to the tv. Then, if ever three programmes clash, we can record two from Sky and watch the third via Freeview.0
