MSE Eon deal and economy 7

First ever post - so please forgive mistakes/breaches of forum protocol......

I'm in the process of switching to the Eon MSE deal - just registered my account. I thought I'd ring Eon and find out about Economy 7 timings. After a lot of questioning about why I wanted to know this information, the Eon rep advised that Economy 7 was only worth taking if accounted for half of my electricity usage. (Storage radiators etc.. )

He insisted that he was only trying to prevent me paying excessively for my electricity - and said I'd be better off with what he referred to as an 'unrestricted' tariff.

He insisted that the 'day' rate on a non-Ecomony 7 tariff was less than I was going to pay using the 'day and night' tariff.

It all sounded plausible and I look forward to the details which he's going to send me. There was some question whether he could offer/switch me to another deal over the phone as I'd chosen an on-line offer.

This all may have already been discussed on these forums - in which case I'll apologise but could those energy experts amongst you give me an informed answer as to whether there's a better deal available from Eon if I don't go for an Economy 7 option?

Many thanks.

What heating do you use? Electric storage or electric panel or gas?

The break-even point varies with every E7 tariff. Generally the day rate will be significantly more expensive than on a non-E7 tariff. If you do not have storage heating but are cooking and heating with panel heaters (or gas central heating) an E7 option is unlikely to be good.

Are you electricity only with panel heaters? Or night-storage heaters? Or dual-fuel with gas central heating?

Use a comparison site to find the best deal for you.

Run it once as an E7 user and find the cheapest annual cost

Run it again as a non-E7 user (total low & normal consumption) and find cheapest annual cost

    Compare

    Simples!

(Beware; some suppliers will not supply you a single rate tariff if you have an E7 meter, and may charge you to change the meter. Eon is one of the few suppliers that will supply a single rate tariff with an E7 meter)

Edit: The MSE collective switch deal was only available via the Cheap Energy Club website. The offer is now closed, so you can't change it/re-apply. From posts made by Eon on this site, I understand you will be supplied with what you applied for. i.e if you got a quote for E7 then that is what you will get; if you got a quote for single rate tariff, then that that is what you will get.

But if you follow the advice above, you may find an even better deal is available :)

Good morning vivstanshall and welcome to the forum.

Thanks footyguy and Nada666 for the super info.

As already said, if you're changing to the MSE collective tariff, you have to do this through the cheap energy club, we can't do this sort of switch over the phone or with E.ON directly at all (this did close at 10pm last night).

Using a comparison site is always the best way to work out which tariff will be best for you and also to establish if you'll be better off with E7 or not.

As a general rule you'd need to use a significant amount of your electricity over the off peak times to make being on E7 beneficial to you, it'll also depend on the specific tariff and region.

It'll also depend greatly on the way you heat your home and the appliances you have. Usually with storage heaters E7 is best, but always a good idea to double check.

We can offer you a one rate tariff even with an E7 meter, although as footyguy says some others won't offer this.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • Eon rep wont have any idea really about the important details of when the cheap 7 hours comes in on your meter. They can only quote the official timings. Best bet is to work it out yourself and watch, or listen for when the meter starts advancing on the low rate.Old analogue timer switches have a 24 hr timer and the cheap 7 hrs can be anywhere.Radio Teleswitch timers are accurate to a few minutes.Meters with built in timers, like Ampy meters , can drift an hour or two. when the hour go s back next month they will drop back from BST an hour from , say, 1.30 to 8.30 to 12.30 to 7.30 to GMT

    Hiya sacsquacco,

That's good advice about listening to the meter etc and I agree that the meters can be out sometimes.

I can't speak for the advisor on the phone, but we can certainly find out the exact times for the off peak hours.

It means us having the account details, then looking at the meter details and getting the time pattern regime numbers, this is then checked with data we have for regions/ meters etc and we can establish the times.

We do this for Heatwise, E10, E18 etc.

    Thank you

  • :) Hi, I've recently moved into a flat with storage heaters and the electricity is on economy 10.

I've never had storage heaters before and have no clue how they work or when would be the best time for me to use my appliances.

Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Good morning Amandajs11 and welcome to the forums,

These meters are designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They’re designed to give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in each 24 hour period for heating and water heating purposes. This is split into 3 time slots during the afternoon, in the evening and at night. To work, meters are wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits at individual properties. This lets them automatically switch the storage heaters on and off during the off peak times.
The actual off peak times will depend on the area you live along with the specific meter type.

If you need me to check your account for the off peak times, please let me know.

I've put a little bit of info about storage heaters below for you.

Storage heaters are insulated boxes containing bricks with electric elements running through them. They charge up during the cheaper off peak times. The bricks retain the heat which is then released gradually throughout the day. A common complaint with storage heaters is a tendency to leak heat and to cool down too early. As a result, the industry came up with Economy 10. As well as an off peak night period, Economy 10 meters charge up in the afternoon and evening. This ‘tops up’ the stored heat to help properties stay warm throughout the day.

Due to the specialist nature of this type of metering, we only have one tariff for properties with E10 meters.

I hope this helps and let me know if you need me.

Hi Helena, thank you for your reply.

Please could you provide me with an idea of the off-peak hours?

    Thank you

    Amanda

Typically the low rate hours may be:

    00:00h - 05:00h
    13:00h - 16:00h
    20:00h - 22:00h

Except in Scotland where the times are typically

    04:30h - 07:30h
    13:30h - 16:30h
    20:30h - 00:30h

    These are all GMT times

However, times may vary dependent on the specific metering and location you are in.

If you want to know the applicable times for you, then you will need to contact the Eon rep off the board, giving your account details. Contact details are in the user's profile.

But if you are on the new, "improved" version of this forum, you might not be able to see it.
This post describes how to transfer back to the old look forum where you will then be able to see the email address in the user's profile.
