Silly question about Venice

My OH has always wanted to go to Venice but it doesn't appeal to me at all. I was thinking though of taking him for his 60th.
Now, don't laugh, the reason I don't fancy it is because of all that water! I am terrified of water and whenever Venice is shown on tv I always think how awful it looks because of all the water.
What I want to know is, is it possible to go to Venice and sightsee without getting in a boat? There is no way I would get into a gondola or any other small boat so unless we can walk round we will not be going. To be honest, even walking, I won't like with all that water around and all open but I would do it as I am sure OH would love it

The only way to get to Venice without going on a boat is to go by train, you are constantly surrounded by water, you have to walk across dozens of bridges, if there has been heavy rain and high tides you are walking on wooden walkways through the squares etc. above the flood water. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0

If you're talking about the city itself, then, yes, it is possible to visit all the sites and more besides without getting in a boat of any sort - just remember to take some good shoes for walking in. Oh aye, and there are some very lovely places to stay outside of the city which have great access by public transport.0

I can recommend Venice as it's beautiful, but not in the height of summer (July/August) as the canals get really stinky and it's full of tourists everywhere. If you can go in autumn or spring it is lovely. You won't have to go on a boat. There are some bridges, but they're solid. If you do decide to go, don't buy anything near St. Mark's square as it's ridiculously overpriced.0

When I went I went in April, and stayed just outside the City and got a bus into Venice. We walked around all day without having to take any boats. There are many bridges to walk over but you can go around Venice without getting on a boat.0

I didn't go in any boats when I visited Venice years ago did arrive by train though."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Thanks for all your replies. It's good to know you can get round without having to get in a boat.
I think we probably will go there. I know we could go somewhere else, as one poster suggested, but it is OH's 60th and he has always wanted to go there. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
We went in November 2010, we got a short boat trip across the water but it wasn't scary at all & I'm afraid of water too. I don't recall ever walking across any planks, & felt safe at all times. Go if you want to, I spent my life wanting to visit Mexico as I thought that was where Manolito from the High Chapparal came from, the day of the flight I googled & discovered that he came from NY
I never went to NY but I wasn't disappointed with Mexico, although it was nothing like I expected
