Driving from Newport to Cardiff in rush hours - how long does it take?
Hi,
Quick question for anyone who drives between Newport and Cardiff on the M4 during morning rush hour.
Being a hillbilly from Snowdonia, I'm not sure how long it takes to get from our hotel in the middle of Newport to the Angel Hotel in Cardiff during morning rush hour. We're staying overnight in Newport next week and theh missus has a 'do' in the Angel at 9.30am. AA route planner says around 30 minutes, presuamably with no traffic. Was wondering how long it takes in the real world?
Many thanks

Although I'm not a local I recently stayed just outside Newport and the M4 was horrendous at peak times. I would double that estimate at least.0 -
As above, give it an hour.
Also, what day is it? The Rugby World Cup starts in Cardiff on Saturday and there are games next week.
Although your do is early to the rugby, Cardiff does get busy early too on match days and there may well be road closures by the Angel as it is dead opposite the stadium.0 -
Would it be easier to get the train? Angel Hotel is only a few minutes walk from Central StationThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Thanks everyone.
Train would normally be an option but we fancy going to Ikea afterwards and driving back up north on the A470 from Cardiff. It's on Thursday next week, day after the Australia v Fiji match so hopefully should be quiter than the day before.
Will give it an hour I think so that we set off around 8ish.
Thanks again allIn deep...0 -
I'd say get the train, its about £6 return and takes about 20 mins .The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.0

If you go by road they'll be three options:
- stick to the old A48, all the way west into Cardiff - disadvantage lots of traffic lights!
- M4 - turn off at M4(A48) (Eastern Avenue), then queue to exit at Docks turn off (about the third one), keep to the left lane at the bottom head right and continue west to the city centre or
- as above, but carry on past the Docks exit for another three miles, and exit just past the Hospital on your right, take the second turning - this takes you due south into the city centre.
When you get to the Angel (with it on your left) turn left and left again for entrance to Multi-storey Car Park.
