How hard to DIY replace wing mirror glass?

Someone driving towards us managed to hit our wing mirror while overtaking a parked car and the glass has shattered. 10-plate Mondeo (Mk4 I believe?)
The mirror casing itself popped in and amazingly isn't scratched (it's painted). The mirror can still be adjusted up/down etc so pretty sure it just needs a glass swap.
Halfords do their own-make replacement glass for a tenner. How easy is it to replace ourselves?
The other driver stopped, we have her details and she said she'd pay, so we could just pay a garage to replace it. But in case she doesn't cough up afterwards, wondering whether to just fix it ourselves...

Is it a heater mirror?
If so, you might be able to get a Halfords one to fit but you would probably be better off sticking to a genuine Ford item.
Earlier this year I had to replace a glass on a Volvo V50 and this cost me £26 from a Volvo dealer, It was fairly simple to fit but I imagine that if it's not perfectly flat and aligned when pushing it onto the mechanism then it would be easy to break it.
If you ask in a Ford garage, you might find that they will get someone to fit it for you at no extra charge as it's only a 20 second job.0 -
I've used those stick-on ones from Halfords before, they're fine. Obviously if there's any heating elements involved then they may not be appropriate. But for a bog-standard mirror they're ideal. Just clean up the casing thoroughly using meths before you start, and it'll be fine.
One tip - the adhesive is pretty strong, and you can't move it once it's in place. I pinched a couple of arrows from the kids' toy bow & arrow, the type with a little sucker on the end. Use that to hold the glass, makes it easier to position it correctly. And I did a couple of "practice placements" beforehand, before I'd removed the backing, to make sure I knew precisely where it had to go.0 -
Hmmm ok, thanks guys. I know this sounds utterly stupid but we're not sure if it's heated or not!! Never noticed a button for it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have them! Have googled the model but can't find a detailed original spec list.
We'll just get a garage to look as (hopefully) someone else is paying. If it was an old battered car I'd DIY it but it's fairly new, in good condition, and we may be changing it in the next year or so.
Thanks for the info on the process - I'd wondered if the glass just pops in and out.0 -
What car and spec is it?
My car (Honda Civic) does have them but they only come on when the heated rear screen is on, there's no specific switch so yours could be similar.0 -

My Mondeo didn't have heated wing mirrors & I was able to swap in a new mirror from a scrapper without even reading the Haynes! It really is that easy - or it was on my (older) Mondeo. 'Plug & play', really, although cleaning it up is only sensible.
Plus, even if it is heated, it'll take a frighteningly detailed check by a buyer unless you sell in midwinter...
I'd be away to my nearest scrapper & clutching a tenner cash - which *might* even include extracting the old mirror & swapping in the new one, if the scrapper was feeling benevolent towards bemused damsel-with-cash.
All the best & let us know how it goes?0 -

If the Mondeo is anything like the Passat then it's a very easy job

Don't buy the Halfords sticky on ones. Get a proper replacement off ebay, either genuine or aftermarket. It should just pull off, undo the electrical connectors if heated, re connect and push new one on. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-Mk-4-6-2007-Onwards-Heated-Wing-Mirror-Glass-Passenger-Side-LH-/271986858688?hash=item3f53ae1ac0
