We've just had this problem. A lot of companies have now stopped selling drop sided cots ahead of the new regulations coming into force.
As someone with a joint condition it was imperative we had one and it is mainly a US thing that is causing a rethink.
I personally don't know how people manage either without straining.
We were lucky and picked up the old stock version of a cot so it did still have the dropsides.0 -
My second child had the sides taken off her cot when she was 18 months old.
It is going to have to be done eventually. Why not now?Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

and letting the child fall asleep out of the cot is bad anyway. my daughter was always put in her cot to fall asleep, and whether she fell asleep first she was always woken to put her into her cot.
I saw my parents make the mistake of letting my younger brother fall asleep out of his cot and at 5/6/7 they where still having to carry him upto bed to put him in because he was so used to falling asleep out of it he wouldnt go in a bed to go to sleep. No way was I doing that with my girls. I would put them in they would stand up to give me a kiss then they had to lay down and go to sleep. Read a story with him in the ct next time then you dont have to lift him in when hes asleep. we had to take the sides off my daughters cot when she was about 18 months as she learnt to climb out though. my eldest daughter went into a single bed just before she turned 2 as cots are such a pain!0 -

pollyanna, you may struggle to believe this, but before he could walk, our son could flip himself out of his cot with the sides UP! He would simply somehow shove his bedclothes into a pile, stand on it, lift himself so that his tummy was balanced on the cot side and flip himself out. The only possible reaction was to give him a "big boy bed" at 10 months.
He grew up to be a rugby union forward, no surprise there I guess...“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

At 9 months my son could climb out of his high chair so I had to always put it on the lowest setting so he wouldn't hurt himself when he did it. At 12 months he could climb out of his cot so after a couple of weeks I gave in and put him in a toddler bed. DD was in a toddler bed from about 18 months too. Is this an option for your daughter?0

I am in the short mum club as well but my youngest (I have 4) is now 5, so we were always able to get drop sides. Mind you my eldest DS (now 17) could climb out at about 18 months anyway-he was an early walker as well. Ironic really as I spend my time kicking him out of his bed these days lol.
I think this is yet another example of claim culture forcing the majority of sensible people to suffer because of a handful of others.
I would go with the get the child sleepy, but awake enough to get them into bed and sit at the side of the cot till he drops off-I used to hold their hand or foot through the bars-I have skinny arms and small hands though (not so skinny elsewhere lol-DD1 said she would hate a skinny mummy as I am so cuddly recently, love my kids)
Mine went into toddler beds or even full size beds as soon as they started to climb. I even had one daughter who watched us opening the side catches and could undo her cot side herself at just under 2.
