Am I being too pushy with solicitor?

Hi everyone,

We had our mortgage offer through from Halifax on 4th September and instructed our solicitor on Monday 7th and paid the upfront fees for searches to commence.

We are buying my fiance's parents house and as they already have bought another property outright and we are FTB's, there is no chain.

I sent my solicitor an email on Monday asking for an update on the searches and to try and get a completion date in mind and to advise as we get married in 11 weeks is there anything we could do to push the process along as we know the other party involved, we could get them to push their solicitor if they are awaiting anything etc. I have had no response so was thinking of giving her a call to try and get a completion date? I understand searches can take 2 - 6 weeks so am I being too pushy too soon? I have just read so many horror stories of 'being pushed to the bottom of the pile' and that people call every day for an update but I don't want to annoy her! I ovbiously understand that it is not the solicitors fault that we have decided to do this at the same time as planning a wedding and getting married but at the same time don't want to be afraid to push for an update.

Thanks for any advice you can offer. :)

  • I'd call. You're paying for a service. Even just to clarify how long searches take to come back. Their secretary can probably give you the answers you need.

Our borough council lists on the website, they only take 5 working days here which is pretty quick I gather.

You only instructed the solicitor on the 7th of September (i very much doubt searches will have been instructed straight away ) and you have already emailed for an update on the 13th Whilst knowing searches can take 2-6 weeks ?!

Yes I can imagine the solicitor may get annoyed in those circumstances.

My advice - you have already indicated you are "eager to help the process along" if there are any queries but you need to give the solicitor chance as its not just them but 3rd parties timescales they are working with (eg in getting searches, enquiries with vendors sols)

You need to let them get on with it rather than spending their time answering your requests for updates !

The people calling for updates are the people still waiting to exchange after months, not days...
  • I see no harm in calling the solicitor to get a rough timeline and determining if they've actually started. Following up an email that hasn't had a response with a call two days after sending it is hardly pushy. Neither is asking for a timeline a week and a bit after you've instructed them.

    Hi all,

Many thanks for your honest opinions - I think I will give her until Monday and that would 2 weeks after we instructed and a week after a unanswered email.

I won't be demanding things are done now, I just want to be on the same page as her and get some sort of completion data idea so we are both aware of where we stand - just because that hasn't been asked of us.

    Thanks again.

This is ridiculous. You've had this question for over a minute now.
