Berchtesgaden is beautiful. Fly into Salzburg which is an easy 20mins drive. Lots of lakes and mountains. Konigsee and Cheimsee is lovely.

I went to Germany to see Hitlers eagles nest. It was magnificent and a beautiful area. It was close to the austrian border, but not sure entirely where! We got to speak german while we were there and while we were in Austria.

    hope you find somewhere suitable

I've recently been to Lake Constance. It is beautiful there. Also big cities such as Stuttgart, Berlin and Munich are great to visit. Ryanair have flights to all different areas of Germany and Easyjet have flights too!!:j

Before I retired I used to travel to Germany a lot. Northern Germany is not very "scenic" - flat and uninteresting mainly.

The area I liked most was around Ulm in Southern Germany, fly to Stuttgart and have a very scenic drive through the Swabian Alps to get there. Ulm is on the river Donau (Danube) and has the tallest cathedral spire in the world - long climb to the top ! Munich is only an hour away if you fancy a bit of city life.

Another nice area is around Friedrichshafen; one of the budget airlines flies there, but a better way is to fly to Zurich and drive, via the ferry across Lake Constance to Meersburg, then drive along the shore of the lake. Good local wine there, don't see much of it in UK, the locals drink most of it.

You don't HAVE to speak English, I found them all to be very patient with my attempts at speaking their language. Working for a multi-national company though, I found the working language there to be English, which made it difficult to practice my German very much.

The only drawback to the south of Germany, is that their German is not the Hoch Deutsch that most people learn. The accent is very strong, and can be difficult to understand when you are in the smaller towns.

However, it's beautiful. With Munich as a base, you could do day trips to Neuschwantstein, Berchtesgaden, Nuremberg, Tegernsee and the Schwartzwalde - all beautiful places.

    Enjoy!
  • I agree with the many posters that Bayern (Bavaria) is very scenic, also the Rhein and Mosel valleys.

The dialect in Bayern is near to Swiss and Austrian dialects of German which are not comprehensible to anyone who has learned standard German at school.

A cheap option for Germany would be Eurocamp to a campsite near to Pforzheim called BAD LIEBENZELL. We spent a week there as a family for 6 for less than £200 in a tent (last minute break) last Summer. The site has great facilities and you can buy an unlimited ticket for the trains which covers a large area for 5 people for 1 day for €27.

Last year we flew to Prague (cheap), rented a car and drove to Bayerisch Eisenstein, just over the Czech border about 2 hours away. We returned to Prague for a few days in a hotel before flying back. The whole trip worked out at about £350 a head for a fortnight.

The town (village really) itself is not that interesting (though it's not awful) but it's within a 1-2 hours drive of some fascinating places in Germany, Austria and Czech republic.

It's a very hospitable place and we were made most welcome. We even had a guided tour from the mayor.

We stayed at this place which is very cheap and the kids loved it as it's just like a woodcutters cottage from a fairy tale.

If you don't want to drive you can always get a lander ticket (train) which will take you to Munich (including metro fares) and as far as Austria.

PS: Just re-read your original post and realised that it's outside your stated budget but bear in mind that was for a fortnight and included car hire, overnight stay and car parking at Gatwick and 4 nights in a hotel.
  • I stayed in Heidelberg on a school trip many years ago, but still remember it being a very beautiful place.
