is oil fired heating now cheaper than wood pellets and gas?

Is putting in biomass still worthwhile?

  • Oil is currently cheaper than it's been for many years, and is probably pretty much the cheapest form of heating around just now. But who knows what will happen in 6 months or a year's time ? Common sense says that it can only increase in price - so on that basis biomass may still be a sensible option, depending on the capital costs involved.

If anything else Biomass is one of the greenest forms of heating you can get.

Oil prices are extremely volatile. It might be cheap right now but it's also been much more expensive in the past and will probably be more expensive at some point in the future.

Biomass costs should remain quite steady as there are fewer external influences on the price.

Gas will just keep on generally increasing in cost.

    At least that's my opinion.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • It depends what you want to optimise for. Financial savings (over what timescale?), carbon savings, comfort, capital cost, ongoing cost, maintenance cost etc etc.

CH Oil has actually increased in price by about 10% in the last couple of weeks. The average on 28 Aug was 31.94p/litre to 35.12p today.

    So oil is approx. 3.5p/kWh

I can get gas on a 12 month fixed tariff around 3p/kWh with a £30 standing charge - so depending on your annual consumption something around 3.2p/kWh
