Should I do this unpaid 3 day trial for a retail job

  • Have you had an interview? Can they reason why exactly 3 days?
-I would only do it if you didn't have anything else to do.

Years ago I remember doing a day's trial for an Opticians before an interview even commenced - I remember the Director yelling "who was I" when in the back area when I did this half day so clearly he had no idea how people were being recruited into his business, never heard from them again.

If you feel so grieved what stops you taking part and unless they VERY clearly spell it out, raising a money claim online for the hours at national minimum wage if you happen to be unsuccessful.
It would certainly deter them from these crazy practices in future :)
That said I quite enjoyed at my last trial that I could say it definitely wasn't for me 4 hours in and walked off knowing I was glad not to be offered the job for real, the only time I'd let wages go is for an early release.

Yes I had an interview, my family think it is a scam, and she seemed a little bit jobsworth. I'm temped to turn up and just experience what it is like to be a slave.
But, I do have other interviews and I could be doing job seeking- so i dont have nothing to do. I'm honestly still in two minds about it.

because if i did 3 days unpaid i'd be more than gutted if i didn't get it.

So put ALL your effort into it, increase your chances of being offered the role. Turn up on time or even before your shift starts, make sure you follow instructions when asked to do something.

I think it is a blooming cheek to expect 3 days' work for nothing but if this is they things are now I suppose you have to do it if you want a job. Is this sort of thing common nowadays?

I do remember 1 of the pound shops (think it was Poundland) offering jobs on a trial. Ive not personally come across a job trial yet.

I would put all my effort into it. But that dose mean the crush will be even harder if i don't get it. :(

I have, and I am convinced it was a scam to get workers for nothing.

I think anything more than 1 day should be illegal.

How did you get the original interview? Was it through the Job Centre? If so, I would ask them if they agree with a 3 day, unpaid placement.

at the moment , i'm not signing on. But if i was, i think an unpaid trail would possibly mean no jsa? or at least mess up claim.

I once got someone in for an afternoon trial (he got the job) and I felt bad that we didn't pay him! If I really wanted the job I would do something like this but I'd have to really want the job. I'd also want to be sure that they don't have lots of people doing 'trials'. It's a big ask. Three days work is worth at least £160.

well, your one of the nice employers out there. i'm not a robot , i feel i should have dignity in being paid something. its a minimum wage job, and not a nice atmosphere. i guess i have other interviews coming up as well.
