Sorry, £4k price tag, not 4k miles. I don't think it's a "rule" so much as my friends having a bad experience with the last car they bought (cheap but lots of maintenance) and being please with their current car (bought, unsurprisingly, for £4k :p, sounds like a deal as it only had 10k miles on it).

Finally booked a plasterer to patch up a couple of spots and do our downstairs toilet (which was fully tiled until I took a hammer/chisel to it last summer). Got two quotes that are almost 60% different! Cheaper guy seems nice and tweaked his schedule to fit in before I start the new job. :) Does mean the bathroom won't get done before I go back to work, but at least we can move forward with it now. Should be fairly quick once the walls are smooth again - paint, put cladding up on the walls (similar style to our upstairs bathroom and plans for the hallway), and get the plumber out to install the toilet/vanity that have been sitting in our hallway for months.

Otherwise, nothing to report today. May be coming down with the cold DH caught at the end of our holiday, as I've felt oddly exhausted all day. Skipped my run :(, hope to feel up to it tomorrow.

£22.51 OP today from TCB and £co, breaking the 14% mark for the MFiT challenge. :)

Got the interest amount that will be applied on May 1 - £301.89! So close to being under £300 for a 31-day period. As of next month the daily interest should be <= £9.62 so that should cement the sub-£300 monthly interest amount.

Still waiting on old/new job confirmation stuff. Just two weeks before I start the new job! Have not been quite as productive as I would have liked over the last 5 weeks, but in my defence I lost 2+ weeks to non-stop job hunting and spent a week on holiday, so time well spent. :D

Finally got the contract for the new job, so I think I'll only be unemployed for a day. No word from old job because heaven forbid they reply to my e-mail with basic questions from a month ago.

€0n bugged us for meter readings even though we do them every month on the 1st. Apparently on the 12th they can do math, so they re-generated our latest bill and are lowering our DD by £9.50. :)

    1. what an amazing interest! Sure beats my >1k/month :D Can't wait to get to your stage one day. Which reminds me - are you in your forever home or do you think you'll move at some point in the future?
    2. 1 day of unemployment worked out great! when do you start? hope you'll like it!

We bought with the intention that it could be a forever home (we like it and there's more than enough room, given that we're only adding furry children to our family), but we've since realised that we don't want to live in the London area forever. ;) Nice part is we can take advantage of the lower prices elsewhere and either cash out or upgrade house and still be MF.

    Current tentative plan:
    1. Pay off mortgage by early 2021 (ideally 2020)
    2. Spent 2021 squirrelling away our London salaries into pension/ISAs
    3. Move to Wales (?) in 2022 and rent for a year to make sure we like it (possibly also rent this house, depends on how much hassle that would be)
    4. Sell this house, find/build/renovate a house in Wales
    5. Live MF/semi-retired in our early 40s :D

(Tangent re: your interest amount - we originally looked around Zone 2/3 in London for flats but the best candidate was a small 2-bed for £250k. I'm sure now it'd go for £450+, so while it's a shame to have missed out on the equity, I'm really glad that we already own ~35% of our house outright! London prices are insane.)

25th, so just under two weeks now. :) Looking forward to getting stuck in, as being home is getting a bit boring! I'm sure I'll be longing for the days of relaxing on the couch in a month or two, though thankfully the contract I got doesn't say anything about not taking holiday during probationary period, which my last two have done (even though I'm pretty sure it's illegal/useless to put in).

One bonus - new work day runs from 10am to 6pm - positively luxurious compared to previous places where the daily standup meeting is at 9:15am. :D Will have to see if that actually holds true, as it is a startup.

Thanks MFD! I also love reading other peoples' diaries for inspiration/ideas/etc.

Old job finally got back to me and confirmed everything, so I'm officially unemployed for 1 day. :) (Not that I was all that concerned as I'm sure they'd be fine with paying me less if I'd miscalculated and thought I had to stay employed longer, but nice to know for sure.) Bonus: I was worried they'd count my accrued holiday against my notice period, but they've confirmed they'll pay me 8 days' holiday. :j Might be able to manage some sort of regular OP next month after all!

Have decided not to OP the MB winnings as the 5% accounts are a bit lean. DH has booked extra driving lessons to prep for next week's test, so will use the MB money to get those accounts back to their max value. Hopefully by this time next week I can be hunting for cars to buy.
  • Good luck for the driving test next week and hopefully the car shopping.
