Torque curves - which do you prefer?

Something that hasn't been discussed on MSE before... what power delivery do you prefer? The low end torque of diesels or the power delivery of a naturally aspirated petrol?

I wonder why diesels have become so popular in the UK over the past decade. More diesels are being sold now more than petrols. Part of it is obviously better mpg and lower road tax but do the drivers actually prefer the power delivery of diesels?

A DM question if ever I saw one.... And i'm usually sceptical.

People are buying Diesels because the govt promoted buying them from about 2008 til 2012, it was all part of jump starting the automotive sector, which was in serious trouble during the recession, basically promote diesel cars and give people £2000 for their old car.
Now however we're going to see diesel owners being punished for owning them and the promotion will turn toward electric/hybrid vehicles.
The govt likes us buying new cars, the VAT alone is worth billions, all they have to do is keep promoting something difference and the foolish amongst us will keep on buying new cars.

I like the reliability of a NA petrol over a used diesel with expensive DMFs, injectors, MAFs , DPFs.
  • I like the useable torque and good hit of low range power from a diesel. But prefare the torque curve of an EV, mainly because there isn't one

Petrol cars have DMF's and injectors and MAF's.

Low down pulling power when towing a diesel is hard to beat, but i am a
    petrol man at heart.

  • I never had an issue with power delivery until I was given a 308 in Ireland on a business trip about ten years ago. No idea what it was under the bonnet - it just sounded harsh and unpleasant but drove with all the power delivery of a shopping trolley.

I guess with most cars, petrol or diesel, there are combinations that just don't cut it. The front-wheel brake Yaris and the new 337i M-Sport fitted with the optional 'Carlos Fandango' wheel arches spring to mind, for some unknown reason.
  • I prefer a flat torque curve - meaning the torque is evenly distributed across the entire rev range. Dislike 'peaky' delivery of power such as diesels, which has a huge spike in torque across a very small spectrum in the RPM range and then runs out of puff higher up in the range.
